Folks:

Ran across this old (and of somewhat poor quality) picture of my grandfather who lived from 1901 to 1979. The rifle he's carrying never made it down to my generation but I'm still curious about what Grandpa was carrying. Can any of y'all come close to identifying the rifle?

Thanks!

Receiver looks like the 1894 model rather than the shorter 1892 so I am going with the 94 rifle. Think Iggy mailed it with his photo.

Funderb - did you mis-spell that ?

The angle of the cuts at the rear of the receiver makes it an 1894. It looks like a standard rifle, with the foreend cap. Caliber? No way to tell.

Thanks for the suggestions regarding what the rifle may have been.

Indeed, the picture is of Bob. We've a few of him hunting:

(That's him on the left standing with his nephew before him, his two 1/2 brothers and family friend to the far right.) In a larger version of the photo it looks like the shotgun is a Browning A5.

None of his firearms came down to me. Neither did any of my fathers. In the mid-1950-s they had been deer hunting with a close friend of my father and the friend's father. Another hunter shot and killed my father's friend's father. Both Grandpa and Dad just quit hunting after that and sold their guns. Sad all around.

been said already, 1894 rifle

The 1894 rifle has a really long barrel compared to the carbines.

can't really tell caliber from the pic.

Went on my first deer hunt w/ a 1894 30-30 rifle.

now own a carbine, same caliber. much lighter gun.:D
