Well,

I've done it. A tired old stuck in the vintage Colt -S&W revolverite bought a plastic-fantastic wondernine.

Came home today with an SA XD9 4" to <deleted>. In the interest of full disclosure I've had Ruger Mk II & III .22's and a small number of 1911s for awhile. That don't really count though does it?

I don't have any pics to post but why would you need another pic of a NIB XD9? Looks just like all the rest of them.

So now that a true luddite has converted, what tips do the young lions have? or comments about my selection over Glock and S&W M&P?

Only that you picked the same one of the three I would have picked, if I needed another plastic fantastic pistol.

But I don't.

My son has an XDs, and IMO, it beats my Glock 23 every which-a-way!

I think that you should get what you like. Now, I do not like the HS2000/XD from Croatia. I think that Glock or MP9 are more reliable guns and will last a life time.
I would think that the Caracal would also be a better choice. Now, that we are seeing Glocks that are "Made in USA" that should be one less thing for people how like to find a reason to not get a Glock. I tend to think that HS2000/XD not being used much as service weapons says something about their usage in harsh environments.

Now that you've been converted you obviously need to get rid of that obsolete, near valueless bunch of cylinder guns you got. I mean in the 21st century, 5 or 6 shots simply don't cut it, and I can only think of 2 revolvers that have any polymer in 'um. :scrutiny:

Throw them in a box, toss in some padding, and send them to me for ah.... proper disposal. :uhoh:

You should get something for your time, trouble and expense. Tell you what! In exchange I’ll send you a spare (refurbished) magazine.

I've had a XD-40 since 2007. It is a good gun. Accurate & reliable. I think you did just fine. As far as Glock & M&P. I haven't shot an M&P so I have to plead ignorance about them. I have shot a couple of Glocks & I liked the way they shot & handled too (particularly the G-23).

Just box up those useless wheel-guns while I look for a magazine...

I think I've got an old copy of Guns & Ammo somewhere. :uhoh:

Fuff,

If I understand you correctly,

You would even take my old 1905 M&P Target, 1892 Safety Hammerless, 1963 Mod 14 K-38 Masterpiece, Combat Masterpiece (same year), 1974 Mod 19 Combat Magnum;

Colt 1977 Trooper Mk III, 1975 Lawman Mk III, !952 Offficers Model, !97? Detective Special,

Dan Wesson 1975 Mod 15-2 6", '76 Charter Arms .44 spl. Bulldog,

1892 MAS St. Etienne 8mm Lebel revolver in trade for a magazine you do not even have yet?

Thats one intriguing proposition.

Can you let me think about that one? There is a flaw in this somewhere.

I have a counter proposal,

I will offer 1 NIB, guaranted unfired outside the factory Springfield Armory XD9 for all of the revolvers you have. Then you will be much ahead of the game. You being now the man that is equipped for the 21st Century instead of me.

Deal?

It will be a couple of days before the Fuff can type in all of his classic revos. In the meantime ,....

Back to our original programming.

What do the wondernine young lions think of my choice to "break the mold"?

I haven't even shot it yet. What do I need to know to be an "Ace"?

I think you made a good choice. Glock, XD, M&P are so similar in build quality and reliability that you can't really go wrong. Each one has something the others lack. I personally switched from XD to Glock but just recently went out and picked up an XDS.

I have to confess to owning one of the "plastic" 9mm's. I chose a Taurus 24/7 OSS (buncha letters, those are all I can think of right now) a couple of years ago. Heavy devil with a full load of ammo but it's the ca/truck gun. I wouldn't want to pack it around on my hip very long.

After shooting my grandson's XD9 I'm tempted to trade but I really like the 24/7. Maybe I just need to "add" an XD instead of trading. :D

I couldnt agree less with this garbage.A glock is a glock regardless of where its made and still looks like a brick.I get tired of the glockfantics trying to over shadow every thread with "glock perfection".The OP obviously made a good choice in handguns,he doesnt need someone telling him his gun is "inferior" because its not made in autria or parts of the US.<rant over>.

I have two XDM's, somewhat different from the XD but I have to say great guns. The 9mm has over 10k through it without a malfunction, the 45 ACP 4k without gun problems. I'm an old revolver type with a few 1911's thrown in and I must say, I shoot the XDM's better than the 1911's. Revolvers are good, I'm keeping them and my XDM's.

Well I may use the force from the dark side..

If you do not like a Glock buy something else, I have no problem with that. I stated my personal thoughts on the XD/XDm. And to be honest the dislike for the gun is based somewhat on the mis-leading advertising that Springfield uses to make people think that they are related to the Springfield Armory that was really an American icon and that Springfield manufactures the gun.
I also get tired of the anti-Glock claim that Glocks are not made in the USA. They have a large manufacturing presence in the USA, just up until recently they USA build guns have been for export.
It comes back to an old saying, "Nobody ever lost their job by recommending IBM" during the days when IBM vs Amdahl mainframe was the choice.

Excellent post Deaf. To be honest I tend to shoot my semi-autos more but I've got an old beat up Dan Wesson model 15-2 that I am very fond of. It isn't going anywhere. I like to use it for woods carry. I like the broad range of ammunition it can use.

I knew it was a Croatian. Just can't get used to Glock ergo's, though I know they are a fine weapon. The M&P was a bit pricier (than the XD, Glock more expensive yet) , also a good gun but the skimpy rails (by comparison with the XD) hinged trigger (revolver guy remember?) and the AMOUNT of daylight I saw between slide and frame from a side view were off putting. I also have a lot of rounds through buddies XD's and XDM's and they shoot well for me. Thanks for the input guys!

I have fired many Austrian Autos and shoot them well. I can even admit that I can pick up the Dot and U sight a tiny bit faster than the three dots on the SA. However, I own and carry an XDm Compact in .40. I think you made a fine choice to "break the mold". The limited popularity of SA products as "Duty Weapons" is meaningless to me. I realize the PR push and give away pricing the Austrians used to promote their product. And using Law Enforcement acceptance of the brand as proof of it's superiority is the equivilent of saying a Crown Victoria is the best vehicle on the road because of it's acceptance among LEOs. Hold your head high and carry on.

On a side note, I'm not sure if it's the Ergos or the Egos that turn me off on the G-locks.

When I decided to get a poly pistol for carry, I went to the range and shot all the 9mm and .45acp rentals. The M&P, XD, and Glock offerings all impressed me with their quality. I knew I'd be going with those two chamberings, and found the XD checkering a bit aggressive for my taste - which is entirely subjective. It is, however, a fine weapon. I ended up really enjoying the G30, so that's the way I went. A year later, I own a 30, 34, 21, 26, and a 36. This poly stuff is addictive!

Congratulations on the XD. It's a quality piece that should serve you well.

One nice thing about these is that the market is so hot on them, you can turn it quickly if you decide you don't like it!

My comment today is thank God for UpLULA mag loaders as it would be tough to load the full 16 without it! Functioned fine shooting cans and busted clay pigeon fragments. Very easy to field strip, and I find that a plus.

So now to the bench to detail and I promise NRA 25 yd slow fire targets and pics next. Warning, I am no Rob Leatham. The gun shoots very well for me though. I certainly hit what I expected to. I do think its regulated for a "6 o'clock hold" though.

My revolvers are set to the bisecting sight picture. Minor adjustment. The brass didn't form any nice little pile but it wasn't like a lawn broadcast spreader either. I am a little too old and fat to enjoy chasing brass. Winchester White Box 124gr FMJ, I assume the standard plinking ammo. A box of Federal Premium 147gr Hydra Shock 20rds set me back 24.00! Guess I was lucky to get it on the local Academy shelves. Wonder how long before I can actually cash in on some cheap practice ammo in quantity?

Should I expect a different POI from the 147gr?

Very happy so far.
