Old stuff/New stuff

I'm new to reloading. My father recently gave me a box of old 7mm rem mag rounds. He said the guy that made them was known for making some pretty hot stuff and he'd rather not try them. Dad wants me to take them apart and use what i can. On the side of the box the guy wrote 4831, but i'm not sure if its IMR4831 or H4831. The granules are cylinders .089" x .039". Is it possible to identify this powder, and if so would you reuse it to sample whatever powder it is?


I'm also looking for a good deer load for this round to put through a remington 700bdl. I'd like to send a 140gr bullet out around 2900fps give or take, about like a 7mm-08. Any powder and bullet combinations would be great, thanks

I don't know any loads for a 7mm Mag but never, never try to determine what a powder is by appearance. If you've got a box of this ammo that's maybe 1200 grains of powder? Just dispose of the powder by dumping it on the grass, Plenty of nitrogen and good fertilizer (although expensive to buy for that purpose)

It sounds to me like you have some good brass, bullets and fertilizer. I would never use powder that I wasn't sure what it was. The powder is the cheap part of reloading, use new.

Just to add my two cents, I have both powders on hand. I poured a little of each on a piece of white paper and with a 3X magnifier could not tell them apart. The other two gentlemen have given you sound advice, either dump the powder on your lawn of flush it down the sink. Now if I can figure out which powder goes in what can, LOL!

I agree with the other fellas. Pull the rounds down, dump the powder on the lawn and reload them. You'll be money, marbles and safety ahead.
