Can anyone tell me what rifle goes to this stock? I have no idea, has some numbers stamped on it, but no maker's mark anywhere. I cuts into my skin when I shoulder it, the curve is pretty extreme. Just curious more then anything, been digging through my stuff I put away as a kid.

I have an old single barrel Marlin 20 ga that has a stock that looks a LOT like that. It belonged to my Great grandfather.

How well does it fit to your shoulder?

I've never fired the gun. It isn't safe to shoot, just a wall hanger with family history. But just shouldering it I don't think it would be comfortable for me. Men were certainly smaller back then. It is skinny and both the top and bottom of the steel crescent buttplate would dig into my shoulder unless I mounted it very carefully.

The shape is very close if not the same as yours. But there appears to be less wood on the tang on mine and the metal part of the receiver extends down farther on mine. They may well have been designed by the same person and for similar guns. The Ballard design dates to the Civil war. They went out of business in the 1890's, but Marlin continued to build single shot rifles and shotguns on the same design for several years. This was about the same time Winchester was starting. If not an exact copy Winchester may have been heavily influenced by the design.

The date is about right for my great grandfather. He was well into his 90's when he died in 1953 meaning he was born just prior to, or during the Civil War. I'd guess he bought this in the late 1890's or early 1900's.

Stock looks similar to my '73. There are usually a few Winchester '73 stocks on Ebay. You could take a look at them and compare the upper and lower cuts to see if they look similar. Same for 92's.

Does it have a trapdoor in the buttplate?

No, it doesn't unfortunately. I will include some other pictures of the top, bottom, the butt plate, and the connecting end. Its in fairly good condition, just been laying aorund in a box of misc. stuff for about ten years or so.

The long rifles had the hooked butplate, carbines were slightly curved but no sharp hook.

Winchester .22 pump/ gallery gun.
I can look at one of mine if you need a model number.
........... I'm guessing gallery gun. Friend of mine has one, a Winchester Model 1890 in 22 Short. Only pictures of it here on the computer show people firing it and the buttstock isn't fully visible but if it isn't from a gallery gun I'm guessing some other model of Winchester.
