i bought a rifle with a older redfield scope and the dealer i bought the rifle from recomended i send the scope back to redfield and have it refilled with gas.is there a way to tell if it needs to be refilled?i'm guessing its a early 90's made scope

Not unless it fogs up internally when you take it out of a freezer into warm humid air.

Or you can drop it into hot water and see if it bubbles when the gas inside expands from the heat.
That indicates a leaking seal and that the gas has leaked out.

I could be wrong, but I do not believe Leupold / new Redfield will service the older Colorado Redfields, as they didn't get the parts, they only bought the name.

As such, they can't service them in case they need new seals, etc.

Holy Diver;

I do believe that RC is correct in his assessment of Leupold's ability to service your older Redfield, but check with them by all means. Just call 'em up & talk with them, they're very friendly folks. If, as both of us suspect, they can't really help you, I'd then try Premire Reticles.

However, until you know that there's something wrong with it, I'd leave it alone. There's no sense in trying to make it fail with some sort of torture test. As the year turns, just take it out of the house some cooler morning & see if it fogs. I've got a 1960's Denver Redfield that's still doing just fine after all these years.

ok its 102 outside @ 10:45 pm outside inside my house is 75 i walked outside and it fogged up pretty bad shoot, the whole rifle had a glaze of h2o.i wipped off the glass and it was clear as a bell.what does that meen?

Holy;

It means that all the condensation was on the exterior lens surfaces, not internal to the scope. You're good to go. Just take a packet of lens cleaning tissues along with you come hunting season.
