I was target-shooting today with a Ruger 10/22, fitted with a red-dot sight.
I've always be told it is better to shoot with both eyes open, rather than to close the eye you are not aiming with. (Which is why I shoot left handed, as I'm left-eye dominant, despite being generally right handed).
However, I discovered that when I closed my right eye, the red dot appeared smaller and sharper. Whereas if I keet both eyes open, it looked less sharp, and spread out sideways a little.
More significantly, for all the targets I shot with both eyes open, the groups were centred roughly two inches to the right of the centre. But when I shut my right eye, they were (on average) right in the centre.
So I'm wondering:
Is it better to shut one eye when using a red dot?
Or is there something I should be doing differently?
Or is it just something that varies from person to person (i.e. "do what works best for you")?
