Robbery Suspect's Family Speaks Out

(Phelps, NY) 04/13/05 -- Police say that Robert Everson, 21 was armed with a shotgun Wednesday when he demanded cash from the Ontario National Bank on Griffith Road in Phelps.

He then shot at two security cameras and held a customer hostage for a short time before letting him go.

Everson took off in his Jeep and was immediately pursued by Ontario County Sheriff's deputy Sgt. Kevin Owens. The chase ended a short while later when the Jeep ran into a utility pole.

Investigators said that Everson got out of the vehicle and fired shots at Owens. The deputy returned fire and shot and killed Everson, who died at the scene.

Owens suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at a hospital. The Ontario County Sheriff said the deputy's actions were justified and called him a hero.

Delores DeMay saw the crash and shooting from her kitchen window.

"It was unreal,†she said, “we didn't know what we were seeing."

At first, DeMay thought it was a plain car accident when she saw the car hit the utility pole across the street.

"We saw the young fellow get out with a rifle in his hand…He took a shot at the undercover officer…The officer shot back, then he came back around and propped the gun up, the officer fired again and hit him, he didn't get back up," she said.

Family Speaks
Everson's family said Robert spent Tuesday night with his girlfriend and even enjoyed a spaghetti dinner. They do admit, however, that he suffered from psychiatric and emotional problems and believe the robbery might have been a cry for help.

The family said that Everson hasn't been the same ever since an attempted suicide two-and-a-half years ago left him with a brain injury.

Last summer, Robert spent 45 days in jail after pleading guilty to rape. When he was released, he was put on probation and listed as a sex offender. His family says that factored into his emotional problems.

His cousin, Sue Everson, said that despite his problems, Robert was sweet and loving.

"He was just a kid struggling to find an identity...When we would come here, he would come meet me at the door give me a great big hug and a kiss, say, 'Hi. I love you.' That's the kind of deep down person that Bobby was," she said.

Everson worked two jobs as a dishwasher, so his family didn't think he needed money. They're still not sure what exactly set him off.

Everson's father says what Robert did was wrong; he apologized to the community and to the bank. He also said he just wishes his son could've gotten the help he needed.

Heh, interesting to see the families reaction to this...

Isn't every violent crime?

Perhaps you're confusing cause and effect.

Aren't they all?

Guess he got one.

At least someone gets it.

Sorry to sound so cold. I just can't muster much sympathy for this guy.

I love all the talk about how this guy was a victim of his own surroundings. He was really a good guy deep down it was just society's woes that made him rape, steal, threaten, and try to kill. I'm glad the police officer wasn't harmed, and also that no bystanders or hostages were harmed.

45 days for rape? Sickening. Maybe he felt bad about that too, and he was trying to get a life sentence or something.

I'm sure that the rape victim, the hostage he took, and the cop he tried to kill all felt the same way.

I work as a therapist for Community Mental Health. I would have to say that the easiest and best way to get help is to just call or come in. Robbing a bank is not a cry for help, it is a cry for money.

In my professional opinion, in order to avoid these types of emotional problems, you shouldn't rape anyone.

His cousin, Sue Everson, said that despite his problems, Robert was sweet and loving.

Huh?!?!? Either Sue is a big dumb a$$ or the most forgiving person in the world.

Now, there is classic English understatement! Monty Python returns after a word from our sponsors........

This is the kind of crap that pisses me off about this country!! This guy commits a FELONY and gets a slap on the wrist?! 45 days in jail for raping someone just doesn't seem adequate in my book. I mean, in some Middle Eastern countries they'll cut off your arm for shoplifting, and I can't help but wonder what they'd do in the case of sexual assault? I have no sympathy for this prick and will not apologize for "not being sympathetic." It's only too bad he didn't try robbing the bank BEFORE he decided to rape a girl. Maybe that cop would have stopped him back then.

:cuss: Five Cent :cuss:

Yup, cry for help.

Rape and Armed Robbery are sure a cry for help.

At least the parents didn't accuse the cop of "murdering their baby" ... yet.

Hmmm . . . convicted felon robs bank, takes hostage, runs from then shoots at LEO.
LEO returns fire, killing Felon.

Good shoot . . . no problem I can see. Wish more felons ended this way. We wouldn't have the prison crowding we have now.

Wonder how Sue would feel if it was she who had been raped . . .

As do I Steve, and I'll second Steves opinion.

Maybe he needed the money to fund reseach into the antidepressant qualities of lap dances!

Antisocial

Operative word-antisocial....and all the wonderful qualities/traits of antisocial- manipulative, using others to get his way, cannot tolerate frustration because feels entitled to get all the goodies of life without working for them. So many more of them it seems. And in the mental health system, they're predators on the vulnerable or less fortunate folks in society. Family was either duped or in some serious denial.

Stone the b*tch for tempting him.

(Or were you kidding? I may have misunderstood).

...and believe the robbery might have been a cry for help.

Nope. It was an armed robbery.

Isn't unreasonable anger a common effect of brain injuries?

Yep. Psychomotor epilepsy can be one of the results of head injuries. Pychomotor epileptics don't fall down and have grand mal seizues; instead, they have no visible seizures or petit mal seizures. They're often subject to fits of abrupt anger and/or rage and/or violence.

Psychomotor epilepsy is often treatable—but the patient has to take his medications. Many don't. Prisons are full of them.

Well, Honestly, I have no idea where to start. Bobby was one of my bestfriends ever. The media only pertrays so much of the truth.

The girl he "raped" was infact my little sister. He did not rape her at all. He had juts turned 18 two weeks before, and she was 15. They had sex. There was no RAPE about it. Trust me, I would know. And how does she feel about this? she feels like she lost one of the most important people in her life. Bobby wasn't an outcast or anything like that. He was VERY popular, and quite the ladies man. He was gorgeous. Here, In Ontario County, where we live, the cops do whatever they want to get what they want. They had it out for Bobby's family because they had a lawsuit against them. One of the cops stormed into their house, threw bobby mother who weighs about 110, and is about 5'4 onto the couch and jacked bobby up against the wall. I bet you're wondering why huh? Because his 11 year old brother said f- you to the cops daughter on the bus. When bobby went to jail, the cops beat the ???? out of him. After he got out 2 weeks later on bail, me and bobby went to a basketball game together. There was a court ordered order of protection between him and my sister. Supposedly he was with her, not me, and he went back to jail for 2 weeks. Oh yeah, my mother didn't want to press charges against him. but when she told the cops that, they tried to put me and my sister in a foster home. Yep.. they're real ????ing nice. Also, to get a statement from my sister, they locked her in a room at school for 3 hours screaming at her. Incase you don't know, that's VERY illegal.

Anyways, Bobby went into a huge depression... and he tried to kill himself. He did try to get help after he got out of the hospital. Since the courts made him go to one of their people to see if he was stable enought ot go threw with the rest of the trial, they said he was okay. That was bull. After all that, a coupe months later, he tried to kill himself again. Then he went to the psyc. ward in clifton springs. they put him on a whole bunch of meds. and sent him home. I guess they thought that would help. Bobby did take his medicine, regularly.

Now here is some more stuff they don't put in the newspaper. Stuff that made it even harder to cope with. They told Bobby's family the medicine could have caused him to think irrationaly. Which he obviously did. And.. The paper says how bobby was standing up ready to take another shot when the cop shot for the second time and killed him. The correner told his father for the way the 2nd bullet entered bobby's body, he would've had to have been laying down flat on his back. I know this is true, I saw the pictures.

And another thing. A lot of you can't imagine how hard it owuld be to lose a bestfriend. Imagine losing him with in 4 minutes walking distance to your house.. and watching him being taken away in a hurs.

I am not at all trying to say what bobby did was right. I know what he did was wrong. All I am trying to say is that none of you knew him. And yes you are all intitled to your opinion, but think about who it is hurting. You arn't hurting him, you're hurting us, the ones who knew him, and who loved him. No one would ask for your sympothy for him, but many people are kind enough to give it. If you want to sympothise someone, how about his Dad, Mom, 19 year old sister, 14 year old brother, or 10 year old sister. Or his many many friends.

Thank you for your time.
~Liz

RIP Bobby :(

I feel for you. You say he was a good kid, wouldn't harm anyone, etc. That we don't know what it's like to lose someone (I do, actually, as do many here)

BUT:
Armed robbery, under any circumstances, isn't ok. If you shoot at a cop, expect to be killed.

in a scenario like you describe, I could understand if he went and shot the police (still wrong, but it's comprehendable). I just don't get why he would go and rob some innocent 3rd party.

Thank you for the real story Liz. I'm sorry for your loss. As usual the news report doesn't tell half the story and we like to over-react a little from time to time. The hardest part of being a member here is remembering who is perfect and who is working on it.

Good luck and thanks again.
