In a discussion concerning main differences between our main political parties, one of the most obvious differences appears to be the following:

Republicans are not concerned about the people they govern being armed.

On the other hand, all leaders of the Democratic Party are very uncomfortable that the people they govern are armed.

Is this a valid realization, or not?:neener:

No, there is no difference between the parties. They have both screwed us in the past, and will continue to do so.

I believe that one of the major problems we have with the current oligopoly (only 2 parties to pick from, bad and worse), is that people keep thinking of the parties as of about 1974. Despite new evidence, people assume that if they liked the republicans back then because they stood up for gun rights, the republicans of 2009 must be the same way, right? Well, no, you have to look at what a particular Dem has done for you lately, and what a particular Rep in a particular race has done, lately. Would Pres Bush II have signed a renewal of the Anti-assault weapons bill? Yeah, most likely. Did the hallowed Reagan sign legislation in California as governor that curbed gun rights? Yes. I am really sick of how every election cycle, all we hear is "well, party A is pretty bad, but party B is worse!" I do not believe that republicans should consistantly get a pass from voters because we assume they will be better on the issue than dems. Which republicans exactly did put their name to the Lautenberg Act?

Clearly wrong in view of recent WH statements. The President, no less, has supported open carry where permitted by local laws.

There are actually many pro-gun Dems. You maybe want to thank them, as they are the only ones stalling and stopping new legislation from coming down as the Reps have no power.

Jim Webb (D VA) is much more pro-gun than George Voinovich (R OH) so it's not entirely predictable by party. As always, you have to look at an individual's record.

What you'll find is both parties are filled with moderates, and we only hear the very vocal minority from each. Honestly I'm more concerned about the agendas of the moderates rather than those from the vocal, since we know those already.

No party is worse in that regard. I am however a Republican since I seem to fit the classic ideal of that party and hope to bring it back (smaller govt, state rights). Both parties have plenty of anti-2nd amendment folks in their rankgs, so don't just side with a party because they talk the talk, because few will actually walk the walk.

I vote Republican as they tend to destroy the country at a markedly slower pace than the Democrats. We are poorly served by both, in general

Your statement might be more accurate as, "Conservatives are not concerned about the people they govern being armed.

On the other hand, all leaders of the liberals are very uncomfortable that the people they govern are armed."

Three years ago I added up all the congressional votes on gun legislation from 1964 to 2004.

Generally speaking:
About 2/3 Republicans voted for guns, about 1/3 against guns.
About 1/4 Democrats voted for guns, about 3/4 against guns.

I looked up the records because I noticed that the Brady Campaign donates almost nothing to Republicans, while the NRA donates lots of money to Democrats. The NRA understands that the dividing line on guns does not rest on Dem/Repub party lines.

By the way, there is one very staunch Republican with a lifelong 45 year history of working in the party. She was born in a Republican family, was the chief aid to Republican members of Congress, married a prominent Republican who was Secretary of the Treasury in the Ronald Reagan administration. She is still an honored and powerful member of the Republican party. Her name: Sarah Brady. Don't make the mistake of thinking that every Republican is your friend.

We'll see how "pro 2A" Obama is when the first gun control law legislation hits his desk.
He talks the talk but when he's walked in the past, he's walked elsewhere ....
