I can buy only one more firearm. ( I'm married) I have one 1911 and one SW revolver both in .45acp. I live in the city. with the threat of losing the right to buy any more guns, what would be the best way to go. another handgun? Rifle? Shotgun? carbine that uses .45acp?

Doesn't HI have a state AWB? If so, an SU16. If not, an AR in .45.

If you REALLY cant buy anymore guns, then I'd say get something a little more capable for home defense. Either a .45 ACP carbine or a shotgun. Living in the city you probably dont go to outdoor ranges much, if ever, so a real rifle might not be much fun.

May I suggest you think about a shotgun for home defense? A 20 gauge loaded with #4 buckshot makes a good Social Work implement with reduced chances of unintended consequences. Rifles, and handguns to a somewhat lesser extent, can easily punch holes through your walls and on into a neighbor's house.
(I prefer a 12 gauge loaded with #1 buck, but then I don't live in the city.)

To me, a shotgun would make the most sense. Specifically, an 870 home defense, which IMHO is a mis-nomer. It's an excellent choice in vehicle to vehicle confrontations also. And LEO's, for some reason, seem to get their shorts in a knot quicker over a handgun in the car than a shottie.

I concur, a 5-shot, pump action shotgun.They're lethal, reliable,fun to shoot,and aren't listed in HR1022, so shouldn't be affected by a new AW ban should one materialize.
My vote goes for Shotgun. If that's the last thing you get, than that's your best bet for effective home defense, and most versitile choice. That's what I would do if I were in your shoes. As it is, a shotgun, and a .22 rifle, are the next things in my list anyway.

2 of your "3 bases" are missing. I believe the shotgun would have greater utility than a rifle, assuming you live in an urban area.

Good choices, to be sure, but again,I'd recommend going with the 5-shot magazine as it's not listed on the latest ban legislation.

If you can legally do so in Hawaii, I'd suggest an AR-15 or some sort of high-capacity-capable rifle. Anything from a Mini 14 to a FAL.
Everybody needs a "fightin' rifle".
Of course, it depends on what you want to do with the gun.

There is no AWB in Hi. The only real restriction is a 10 round capacity limit on pistol mags (paradoxically, any size rifle mag is legal). Last I checked, Magnum Firearms in Honolulu was fully stocked on EBRs and shotguns, so you can handle several different models before making a choice.
Don't know how well stocked the other stores are right now, though.

I read a pump shot gun is more reliable in reguards to shooting a wide range of ammo. I've read about the 870, but the military uses the mossburg 590. what's the difference between the 2? I have short arms so I need a short stock. I've been told for HD the less "tactical" looking the better in court. do they make short stocks for both?

I was not aware of that. I guess you learn something new every day.
Iyn - you might want to check out some youth model shotguns. They already come with shorter stocks installed. I don't know how well you can handle recoil but a 20 gauge may be a better place to start for a new shooter.
On the Mossberg versus Remington debate, that one is ongoing. Both are good guns and that's why you'll find so many comparisons between the two. You'll just have to handle both and see what you like best.
I'd vote shotgun. Another plus to the Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 is that if you buy it for self/home defence you can get it with a shorter barrel but if later on you decided you wanted to use it to hunt or shoot skeet or whatever else you can get more barrels, choke tubes, etc. for what ever purpose for a reasonable price. Shotguns are the tupperware of firearms.

Here's the really annoying part: manufacturers know that there is a capacity limit for pistol mags, so they assume the rifle mags are illegal too. I am still trying to find a company that will ship AR and AK mags to me. As it is, I can buy them at a gun store, but they cost an arm and a leg.
