Senseless loss.

Good point you've (OP) made. Here we complain how the media only shows the bad side of gun owners, completely missing who and what the majority of us are. Yet, at the same time, some accept the media's depiction of other groups.

It is so very unfortunate that this young man's life was cut short by some gang banger scumbag who appointed himself judge, jury, and executioner.

We have all kinds of programs that warn kids about the consequences of having sex and using drugs.

No one in government wants to warn kids about the consequences of joining gangs or the dangers to innocent folks at the hands of gang bangers.

Why is it "governments" responsibility to warn kids of the obvious dangers of gang membership? And, really, are we so naive as to think that "just say no" to gang membership is effective or and efficient use of our tax dollars?

Leadcounsel - what is a disarmed, helpless, police department-ignored community going to do against armed thugs? The police have no cares about stemming the control of gangs in those neighborhoods, not when they get grant money to just make believe at fighting these problems.

Also, how can these people afford to pack up and leave?

These cities won't allow poor people to head to the local sporting goods store and pick up a $200 HiPoint carbine or a $300 shotgun because gun ownership among the poor, in the minds of the beknighted leadership of these communities = "arming gangs."

Which is hilarious, since the gangs get their weapons through a black market untouched by anything resembling law except law of the jungle.

Because considering the cost to the taxpayer of prosecution, long term incarceration, and the increased odds of the taxpayer being obligated to bear that costs multiple times once a person is in the system, there's a reasonable chance that a small program that knocked down the rate of youthful offenders even slightly would have a positive ROI.

And realistically, what's obvious at 25 or 30 isn't obvious at 14 or 16.

Silverlance, point taken.

I don't know what the atmosphere is like on Calguns. But I think if either of those two posts you quoted were put up here on THR, or on SIGForum (the other forum I frequent), there would have been a hail of protest from other members and probably a moderator lock as well.

I don't think any culture, including the "gun culture" can be judged by its angry outliers. What in my mind makes a culture honorable is how the culture as a whole responds to the angry outliers. If a racist demagogue pops up and we all jump on the bandwagon, then bad for us. If a racist demagogue pops up and we all object/reject/eject, then I think we're as good as any culture can be.

Again, sorry for your loss. I pray for the peace and comfort of all who are touched by it.

Silverlance,
Everytime I read about something like this I find it difficult to describe the feeling it gives me. sadness, anger, loss, rage, and of course injustice. This young man had a chance to do well in life, so some worthless barely-humanbeing has to cut his life short just based on "where you from", or possibly the color of his skin, the street he's on.
in enrages me to think of, but it also moved me to think.
I did shed tears for young Jamiel, his father and mother, and they will be in my prayers.
The work you do must not suffer from this attrocity, other young men and women need the right guidance if they are to make it in the inner city. thank you for the post, Please thank his mother for her sevice, especially in so hard a time for her, and I pray for peace for all of you.

Jake

My condolences to his family and friends. My wife and I hope the police find the ones responsible and they get what they deserve. What a terrible tragedy. May he rest in peace.

Another person who probably would have become a good American is lost. Gun crime really does hit home.
Condolences and prayers.

I was notified today that a suspect has been arrested. I hope this is the guy who did it and not just some guy that the LAPD is going to throw to the wolves so that they look good as they've had the heat turned up under them due to this tragedy.

I'll try to find out more as time goes.

ETA: Found the story today. If this really is the guy who did it, I hope he gets what's coming to him. And, on the other hand, I want people to see this - a GANG MEMBER, FRESH OUT OF PRISON, GETS A GUN ONE DAY AFTER BEING RELEASED. So much for the 10 day wait, DROS, etc. Gun laws only work for law abiding citizens.

From the video:
"He told her that he was seeing some guys coming up on him, and he said that 'This isn't good'."
"Then two guys got out and said, 'What set you from?'"
"Then she heard two shots. I ran outside and I saw him there, and he was dead."

I wish these towns and cities would just band together and make gangs feel as unsafe on the streets as the average 17 year old high school student on his way home.

The solution may be simpler than we think: Offer no refuge to these gangs. Root them out. Mandate the ownership of firearms for every household. Then take to the streets. I'm talking about a good 'ole fashioned posse. I'm talking about making the thugs FEAR FOR THEIR LIVES. Run them out of town. No quarter given.

Some people are going to accuse me of vigilantism. It isn't about that. It is about sending a long overdue message that it is time for these thugs to quit playing gangsta and go get a job, instead of selling crack and knocking off high school students. Citizens shouldn't fear for their lives, criminals should.

I hope the family can heal.

I'm sorry for your lose Silverlance and for the loss of his family. I'll say a prayer for them.

You're right, we become jaded, some are racist, some just don't have any respect. If I've ever displayed that, I apologize.

Sadly, another young person is killed by criminals.

Damn silverlance, I am so very sorry for your loss.
You have my deepest sympathy and condolences. There are so few of the us "good guys" left these days; though I never knew your son, his passing truly saddens my heart.

It is an unfortunate circumstance for sure and of course now we run off at the key board like this
I was notified today that a suspect has been arrested. I hope this is the guy who did it and not just some guy that the LAPD is going to throw to the wolves so that they look good as they've had the heat turned up under them due to this tragedy.

You are a piece of work for sure. I have read all of this and it is a sad situation that the life of a Black young man is taken, they have the percentage of dying before 25 by violence at around 25% and ending up in jail about 50% of the time prior to that time frame for males in the innercity.

Must be a reason for it? Lets blame it on the heat that has been turned up on LAPD because of gang related incidence toward violence and then when they do clamp down on it lets hear it from you, for proclaiming they are throwing them to the wolves.

Having a child and calling him one of your kids is fine, I think many who help out and teach and see these youths over long periods still call them students though. I find the term one of my kids to be off by a bunch, but that is what you want to call them. Do you have any children of your own and if so hopefully they are not offended by your remark.
