Eyes open, that is.

I'm a left-hander who shoots right-handed, and I'm right eye dominant. My left-handed has had me questioning my eye dominance a lot, but it is pretty pronounced.

I shoot trap decently with one eye, and that's how I'm most comfortable. I've been learning skeet and I can't shoot skeet well one-eyed.

Trouble is I can't shoot skeet well with two eyes either. I've only just barely started trying and it's disconcerting as all get out. I'm managing to focus on the target, but I've got this multitude of gun barrels and beads and random trees and all sorts of other stuff cluttering up my vision in double.

Is this way it is supposed to look? Just keep looking at the target and practice ignoring the half dozen beads floating around? Ok, so possibly I am exaggerating a tiny bit.

I've been advised to get one of those little blurry patches for the left lense of my glasses, but I've only got the one pair, and I'd sure rather buy a couple cases of shells than more glasses.

Any comments, suggestions, advice on the one v two eye dilemma, or on transitioning from one to two?

The main reason you're having trouble using two eyes is because your right dominate eye is taking over and you're looking at the bead from the side rather than right behind. I know, because I have the same problem. :uhoh:

I've heard the patch thing works. The only other way i can think of to "fix" the problem is to learn how to shoot right handed. It's also possible to "train" your left eye to become dominate, but it's difficult and it goes away quickly.

Try this !

I suffered from the same thing, fitted one of these to my gun a couple of years ago and my scores improved by 30% the next time I went shooting.

I advised a bloke at our clay club recently on the same thing, he got one and next time we shoot he matched my score. Last week he beat my score, and this is after him scoring consistantly lower.

In fact at this rate I may have to take it back off his gun when he's not looking !

Get a Uni-Dot shotgun front sight. It's a fiber optic rod that you see through an aluminum tube. It attaches to your existing shotgun rib with double-sided adhesive tape. It can be removed easily if you don't like it.

The fiber optic sight can be seen ONLY by the shooting eye (i.e. the one behind the receiver). The other eye can't see the rod.

A little practice with one of these and concentrating on looking at the target will soon having you breaking targets in no time.

I can break the targets pretty well with one eye. I am right handed, and clearly right eye dominant, but apparently not enough. I can shoot with both eyes open, I just can't hit anything. I can do it with my scout rifle, because the scope view seems to draw my eye to that sight picture, but with the shotgun or a pistol, no good. I will be ordering one of those Easy Hit, or Uni-Dot thinguses post haste. Worth a try. Thanks.

It takes at least 1000 shots to make a major change in technique. Stick with it, it will pay off.

I like the idea of the uni-dot thing, in fact my guy who is informally coaching me suggested something along those lines, although his first suggestion was customizing my shooting glasses. I can't quite afford to do that, but the uni-dot might be good.

I will stick with for sure, it felt like I tracked the target much, much better, even though the gun was confusing to me.
