Walkalong, you mention "pop" - I'm really just looking for low(er) power practice ammo, so I don't need anything too hot; would WW231 give me reasonable performance in 9mm and 40S&W do yall think? The thought of one powder is very attractive to me
It will work great for plinking loads in those three calibers.

Don't let the "lead data only" crowd scare you about those Raniers.

I do think (know) you will find the Ranier 200 Gr SWC more accurate next time you order. I have shot them both and the 200 SWC shoots better all the way around. If you like 200 Gr bullets in the .45 think about trying some Berrys 200 Gr HP's. They shoot real well and feed in almost any gun. Some guns won't like the 200 Gr SWC style bullets.

rbernie mentioned ZIP, and that is a real good "all around" powder for this app as well, but you just can't go wrong with W231.

W231/HP38 is fine for all 3 calibers you listed, and my preference when shouting lead, but I prefer Titegroup for all 3 when shooting plated/jacketed loads.

Walkalong,

Thanks for the tip. That's interesting that you recommend the 200gr SWC - honestly I bought the round nose bullets because I wanted to be sure I didn't have any feeding problems (I'll be shooting out of a 1911 when it comes back from the smith) and am not really concerned about the shape of the hole made in the paper, since I'm not doing bullseye or any sort of competition. Maybe when I run out of these, I should run over to the local reloading shop and pick up 100 or so 200gr SWCs and see how they shoot before I buy another thousand or two.

The Rainiers are good to go for mid level jacketed loading info.
I use 7.5gr of Longshot under 165gr Rainier plated hollow points and find they are accurate and clean.

231 is the old standby. I've shot it in 357/38, 40sw, and 9mm. It's a workhorse.

Edit:

In fact, I just loaded a bunch of 125 LRN 9mm's over 231. I think I'll toss those downrange this weekend. :D
