Model 38 Carcano in 6.5x52-mm.
Short, rugged, reliable and firing a good round out to 200 meters (its ballistics are as good as most of the larger .30 cal stuff with modern spitzer BT projectiles). If yours can fire the factory loaded .264 bullets accurately (mine can), you're set.

Not a purist of any kind, but partial to single-malt scotch whisky. As far as rifles/guns for whitetail deer:
Remington Model 740 (received as a gift in 1955) in .30-06, nicely upgraded and retuned at a prime gun shop in 1998. Good for more than a hundred deer and more hogs, with one miss inside 300 yards and that was a brain-fart.

Remington 700 BDL or CDL with iron sights and a good set of either quick release or see thru mounts with a nikon monarch or buck master 3-9x40 with BDC reticle and would prefer the gun in 30/06 or 300 win mag (so it could double an elk/moose gun).
second choice would be winchester model 70 with same setup, but the winny must be the control round feed model
third option would be a sako finnbear or tikka m695 in the same chambering(s) and setup
luckily I own all the setups mentioned

Eastern whitetails in brush country: Savage 99, open sights, preferably in .300Savage, but I've nailed a few with a borrowed 99 in .250-3000.
Any more is overkill for what we do.
Longest shot I've had on whitetails: about 50 yds-can't see beyond that in brush.
Closest: a measured 15 feet-I saw him before he saw me. Didn't even use the sights-just point 'n shoot.

started with Italian Carcano 7.35 w/SN bullets
Went to a 222 rem...............DNR boys gave me hell ( they were using this cal. for winter kill)
Next 6 MM Rem in a Rem 700-( the dead cal,)
etc-etc-etc-etc.
about 22 deer in all..................

If I’ve counted correctly the following sequence placement is: 1st (30-06), 2nd (308Win), 3rd (270Win), 4th (30-30) and a distant 5th (243Win).
No surprises here. Apparently the thirty caliber still rules. I thought the 243Win would have been more popular in usage but apparently not per this discussion.

I like 30-30 rifles for whitetail a lot.
The Ruger No 1 International in 6.5x55 I have right now is pretty close to ideal for me but I think I would like a CZ BRNO 602 with a full stock in 6.5x55 if it exists.

I like my Browning BLR in .308.
I have been a 30-06 man all my life (56 years) and all my reloading gear, bullets, brass, guns and dies are all set up for a 30-06. Been that way for two generations.
That said, if our house burned to the slab I'd replace everything with a.270 Winchester cobbled up in a quality Remington 700 topped with a
Leupold 4.5 x 14 scope.
I am reaching an age to where I also need to consider passing my guns to my Daughter. She would like a .270. In fact, I already have given her all of mine. Never can tell what will happen in a few years with registration or passing guns on through inheritance. She is now the owner so she can honestly say she is the owner without estate. legal or probate considerations.
