One shotgun to rule them all

If I only had one shotgun it would be a quality semiautomatic 12 gauge either with adjustable screw in chokes or barrels. I’d want a shorter barrel for HD and a longer barrel for sporting purposes (clays/hunting).

I stumbled on a beautiful old Rem 1100 20 gauge I bought for $600. I wish I could match it with a 12…if you can buy 1100’s cheap, you should consider them…they are sought.

Mossy 930…I have seen a fair amount of them and some run great and a few were dogs that choked a lot. I don’t know why, but I personally am not a fan. I have an old 500 pump that runs great. Wouldn’t hesitate on a 590. But 930’s are a pass for me.

But my one shotgun would probably be a Beretta, hands down. I prefer them to Benelli but Benelli would be my #2 choice. My older Beretta A300 has never choked or failed me. I’ve gone hundreds or rounds without cleaning, just squirting some CLP before a session and keep shooting. I was kinda trying to find out how long it would go but couldn’t take all the gunk it was spewing at me so I cleaned it.

My only issue with my 300 is that I cannot add an extended magazine. I would like to have the ability to load 6+1 or so but right now it’s just 3+1.

I also have a CZ712 that runs very well. They are reasonably priced and mine has shot thousands of rounds. Multichokes and I can extend the magazine (stock is 4+1) so I don’t bother. But I cannot get a short barrel for it for some reason…I’ve looked and been unsuccessful.

Just my thoughts. YMMV

I bought a Mossberg 930 SPX several years ago, as the shotgun portion of my 3 pronged HD setup. It's proven itself with a variety of loads, from light game to 00 buck. About 6 months ago, my buddies wanted to shoot shotguns at a friend's house, who has a lot of land. The idea was clay targets, one launching, the rest of us shooting, one at a time, 5 birds per relay. I though what the hell, I bought the SPX for HD, but it was the ghost-ring sights that I liked, since I am cross-dominant, but would they work on clays? They did, and I actually did better than a few of the guys there that were veteran shotgunners. I had never hit a clay bird in my life, but that day I went 4 for 5 on several relays. I love my 930.

Handled a new Citori w composite stock ( adj comb and 30" bbl ). Felt funky to me, the grip short.

Was thinking such a rig could do trap, sporting clays and even hunt.

Disappointed.

An old lightning felt better.

I have 4 shotguns!
One single shot break action 410, my first one at age 11, 2 1100's one 12 gauge and one 410 and a Browning over and under! For one reason or another I cannot pick a favorite! I might be sentimental, function or one I have wanted for a long long time. For swinging I love the over and under or the 1100 410. I am not good enough , yet, to use the 410 for hunting so the O&U usually goes with me.
Bottom line is I guess I do not own a shotgun that would rule the rest

Suggest join a club or go to a larger show and look for a nice condition 30" Browning Citori 20 ga gun. Many Clays shooters change guns like a shirt, so they do come along. The Citori is a lifetime gun for 90% of owner/shooters, plus if you carry a Citori you are always well dressed.
The Browning 525s and later guns will normally interchange barrels of the same models and same frame size. In other words my 525 20 guage frame guns will exchange barrel lengths and function the forearm hammers for the select ejectors, allowing my 32" to be changed to a 28" with full function, by a simple barrel change.
