I wasn't sure where to put this, so mods, please feel free to move this to somewhere more appropriate.

What is the general consensus on how to conduct trades online, specifically partial trades. For instance, say I have item X up for sale, and someone offers me item Y and $Z as a trade?

My initial inclination is, since they offered an item as part of payment, they should ship the item and send the remainder of the payment. Once I've received item Y, I will ship item X to them.

Does that seem reasonable?

Yup, they are the ones who contacted you and by buying second hand from a private seller, they are assuming the risk. Just be prompt in notifying them when their trade/payment comes in, when payment clears, and shoot them the tracking once you ship it. I Have done at least 100 transactions here on THR and on armslist- mostly reloading related. I've come to the conclusion that there isn't a bad apple in the bunch. Everyone I have ever dealt with has been an honest, down to earth ambassador to the second amendment. That said, I still usually waited for payment to clear when selling online. If the purchaser was a member in good standing here, I would often times ship items before getting a check in the mail.

That's my thought exactly. In my mind, it would be different if I said I was actively looking for trades, but if I'm selling an item and someone offers a trade, I feel like I should receive full payment before shipping.
