Open Carry and Concealed Carry

Howdy, folks. I'm 21 years old and a legal resident of ND. I'm currently stationed in California. Here's my situation. Obviously it's dang near impossible to get a CCL in CA and open carry is not possible in 99% of the areas that I travel. Thinking ahead, when I'm done in the Marines and go back to ND I intend on getting a CCL. Until then, since I spend most of my time in CA, when I go back to ND I want to carry. What would I expect walking down the street with a pistol on my hip with all to see? Good idea, bad idea...I need input.

Go to www.packing.org and see which states are recognised by ND. You may be able to get a (Florida for instance) nonresident permit that will be recognised by ND.

Also, as a resident of ND... when you are home on leave you can get a permit there.

North Dakota is not a traditional open carry state. However, it is a shall-issue state that issues a carry permit that allows both open and concealed carry.

Ways to carry

I kinda like the idea of concealed carry. If a situation occures where I need to use my handgun I want to be the suprise guest at the party. If you carry open and something goes down everyone knows you have a weapon and you become a prime target. My 2 cents .....

You may be able to get a ND concealed weapon permit without leaving CA. It looks like FL and UT licenses are honored in ND also.

I don't know the ND law.
My own view is than in general it is not a good idea to open carry in town. It makes one vulnerable to someone or more than one snatching the gun.
It also makes some folks nervious, and I see no benefit in that.

Sometimes when coming from the range I stop at a Loves TS, and do not conceal my gun. No one notices, but in town I would not normally consider it .

Please provide a link showing where this has ever occured.

I think that it is way more comfortable, quicker on the draw tends to keep people from messing with you.

If it is more comfortable, you will carry more often.

If someone knows you are armed, I think they would automatically look for someone who isn't. If you are mugged at gunpoint and are carrying concealed, you can't beat a drawn gun regardless.

If you are talking about being caught in a bank holdup or something I'll concede that possibly you may be targeted, but you would also be quicker if not noticed. Once again, Being involved in a bank holdup is statiscally very small. Heck, I do all of my banking online anyway.

Are you kidding? In a sense, "keep people from messing with you" is, in my judgment, an immature reason to carry. Why are people messing with you? Maybe you need to change where you go if this is a problem.

If you ever had to shoot, that attitude would get you charged. The DA would probably think you were trying to be tough, and invited trouble. I admit I wonder if that is not correct?? If people do mess with you get out of there, and don't consider lethal force just because someone is "messing with you."

I carry openly about half the time in Colorado.

More people need to see law-abiding American citizens openly exercising our Second Amendment civil rights.

After the Montana legislature defeated HB 340, which among other things, would have allowed "Alaska carry" (concealed in town without a permit), I started carrying openly. Aside from being excluded from Costco (which is an antigun corporation, and I am going rake them over the coals for it), in three weeks of open carrying I have had no problems at all. It did result in two hostile letters to the editor, but I responded, I think effectively. That doesn't bother me, I have thick skin and we need to have this discussion, and gun people need to be assertive.

Aaryq, if you're in Orange County you might want to take a shot at getting your permit. I've read a number of threads about the sheriff there being pretty open-minded about granting permits.
