I think most of us would agree that open carry has many benefits, but openly playing with your gun while in a store, holstering and unholstering it and making people nervous until you somehow justify their concerns by making it go BANG! just sets us all back. Idiots like this hurt our cause.

Here's the article:

EL MIRAGE, AZ -- A west Valley Wal-Mart customer was arrested Thursday after accidentally firing a round while playing with his pistol inside the store.

... suspect was identified as 30-year-old David Walters, of Surprise.

... witnesses said Walters entered the store carrying a semi automatic pistol in a holster.

... Walters continually "messed" with the gun while it was in the holster. He would reportedly holster and un-holster the gun, which made the other customers and employees nervous.

... he pulled the gun out of the holster and thumbed through some nearby magazines...clerk said she was afraid that she was about to be robbed. She notified the store manager of the situation after Walters left the counter.

... while standing at the end of the counter, he pulled the gun out of his holster again.

Upon pulling the gun out of the holster, a magazine dislodged and fell on the floor.

... Walters picked up the magazine, placed it back into the gun, manipulating the gun as if loading the weapon.

While he was doing this the gun discharged and sent shots into the ceiling.

Walters was arrested and booked on six counts of endangerment, disorderly conduct and discharging a weapon within the city limits.

That's pretty much the whole story, but here's the link:

Reminds me of Tackleberry sending a round out of his handgun while playing with it.

You'd have to be of unsound mind to keep "messing" with a firearm while in a public place.

Although this guy is an idiot and unsafe, it makes zero sense to argue against open carry based on his behavior. Using the Brady Bunch's logic, no one should be allowed to operate a motor vehicle. Heck, I just personally witnessed a couple of idiots in an SUV intentionally acting aggressively and recklessly on the road the other day. I own and drive several vehicles, but I don't identify with those dumb*sses and am frankly insulted that anybody would attempt to identify me with them. Ditto with the idiot gun owner in this story.

Geez, what an imbecile.

I always tell aquaintances who ask to "see" a gun at the range or in a home setting. "No, it's safe right here"

ploy or not, the law would have had no effect....

what a freakin idiot fiddling with his gun like that. 30 years old no less

They charged him with 6 counts of endangerment... one ND round of course. Its the "my foot got stuck on the accelerator " argument
He probably froze when the first round went off and reflexively fired off 5 more. What a tad!:banghead:

The first thing I ever learned about guns was that they are NOT toys and should not be carelessly handled.

What happened to common sense?

Inside a store, wouldn't it usually be brandishing the moment it cleared leather, anyway?

Morons like this make us look bad, and unfortunately this will get spread around.

Idiots like this need to be dealt with whether they had their hands on a gun or steering wheel.

Idiots behaving badly with guns.

We strive to illustrate the principles of safe gun handling and responsible gun ownership.

Unfortunately the world is full of examples of failures of those principles...
