Opine on scope mounts/rings for my new Savage

I generally put a scope on a rifle and it stays there until I maybe trade the rifle off or sell it--and that's infrequent for any rifle that works out as planned. So, I've had no need for QD mounts.

I don't really know of any "really bad" brand of scope mounts. I prefer the two-base system over a bridge mount, since four screws in shear are stronger against recoil than the commonly-used three-screw system of a bridge.

I've used Weaver or Weaver-style stuff for decades, mostly because I'm a cheapskate. IMO, the Conetrols are the most aesthetically pleasing, although they're a minor PITA to assemble. They hold as well as any, though.

It's pretty much a case of, "Whatever..."

Warne makes a nice selection of both they started out as custom then branched out to retail the quality is still there.

I don't have the quick-release version you're considering, but i do have Leupold standard 30mm. rings and mounts on my remington 700 pss W/ Leupold MK4 PR mil-dot scope ( the "cheap" Mk 4 ) , and they've worked flawlessly. I didn't get these online, as they were pretty cheap at one of my local gunstores. CheaperThanDirt is often referred to on-line as "CheaperThanNothing", and that pretty much parallels my experience with them.

Don't bother with QD rings. a set of normal Leupold raings is just fine, you can likely get them from the same place that you're picking up the rifle (unless it's Wal-mart), and have them install the rings and scope.

i've had good expereinces with the Leupold 1-piece base and their standard rings. but when i buy my next Savage i'll eventually buy Ken Farrel base and rings from Sharp Shooter supply, granted that's around $200 for a base and set of rings. but they're worth it.

Unless you just want quick release rings I'd go with fixed. I've a Bushnell Elite 10x40 in Leupold QRW Rings (quick release), mated to a Ken Farrell 15 MOA base on my Savage 110 FP.

In the almost 9 years that it's been there I've never removed it and it's zero has never shifted. So, while it's solid I could have done the same thing for slightly less money.

Good luck with your choice.

Another vote for the Dednutz mount. I have one on my Savage Model 12 embracing a Mueller Eraticator, and it is a very nice setup. I am a big fan of one-piece mounts.
