Opinions of Federal primers

I’m one which hates the big Federal packaging. It’s a marketing strategy - sitting on the shelf beside competition, consumers FEEL like they’re getting more for their money, because it’s bigger… but when I get it home, I know when I have that one huge box, I’m basically out of primers, and I can’t get as many on the same shelf, not as many by about 2/3. The sustainablist in me hates the idea of that much extra packaging, and especially that much extra plastic.

So even though I like Federal primers and like the folks I know from Federal, I hate their packaging.

Federal primer packaging size is to comply with DOT shipping regulations. They are known to be the softest cup or easiest to ignite. And they are the most prone to sympathetic detonation. Winchester packaging is a bit smaller, while CCI and Remington packaging is smaller yet. So in this case the smaller the package the harder the primer is to ignite, and resist sympathetic detonations. Federal would love to make their packaging same size as CCI, but they’d never be able to ship them.

It is true that the Federal packaging is for DOT compliance. Specifically it is for the DOT-6C burn test compliance. All primer manufacturers use package spacing to comply with DOT sympathetic detonation requirements. Federal primers are known for being the best igniters in the industry. This is because they produce the highest level of hot particulate with the lowest gaseous overpressure, at the slowest rate.

The Frankford Arsenal hand primer also uses a large tray and handles the Federal packaging just fine.

I like them. All I could find in '07 were Federal match grade, paying around $50/1000, happy to get them. I thought I had better scores @ 100 yds. I don't think for me extra for match grade is worth it. But I will pay extra for CCI 41 and CCI 34 given the choice.
