Opinions on HK USP .45

Been looking into buying the HK USP in the full size but didn't want to buy it without having some good input on it. All the links I have found online have just been to gun magazine reviews (they would give a gun made of 2-ply a good review if the company gave them enough cash).

Anybody own one or have extensive trigger time on one? All info is greatly appreciated.


Side note: Also thinking about an FNP-45.
 
My boss has one that I have shot quite a bit. Shoots good and is totally reliable.

The gun seems HUGE to me. Definitely not a CCW in my opinion.
 
Oversize.
Don't like the safety because "off safe" is the same motion as "decock."
DA trigger is heavy.
For the price range, I think there are better picks.... but it works and if you like it that's your choice.

I had bought a -Compact, in 45ACP.

Good size. Good fit in the hand.
Seemed rugged too.

Then, the magazine was very stiff on the last two rounds inserted.

And the balance was the the factor that I could just not adapt to.
As you know, sighting is balance; fore and aft, as well as yaw, and then multitask trigger control. It was simply unstable to me.
Especially so in rapid fire.

The trigger was poor; I would call it "spongy."

And that was it for my USP.
 
This is going to sound off the wall, but although I own a USP Tactical .45, I don't shoot it much. I got a good deal on it, but it and Glock .45's are a bit large compared to other guns for concealed carry. It shoots great, accurate and reliable, and it DOES have 12-13 rounds available. I would go into combat with it. It is not one of my main, everyday guns. You could do a a whole lot worse than to have an HK USP in .45.
 
I've got one, and it's been a great pistol. The DA trigger is L-O-N-G and stacks like flapjacks, but the SA trigger is not bad. The thing is dead reliable. No malf's of any type so far.

The only reason why a USP wouldn't work for you would be some very specific reason that you'd discover after using for awhile. If you just want a solid reliable gun that gets the job done, buy one. That's kinda how I've been with guns, figure I won't know what I like best until a few hundred rounds ... so I buy some of everything, and have never lost a dime selling ones I didn't like.

I do have one of the Buds USP .45 trade-in guns and like it as a combat pistol. To put tight holes in paper would take either a ton of practice or a better trigger, but it'll easily shoot minute of bad guy at 25 yards with no practice. The gun fits my hands well, long skinny fingers, and points naturally. For me, it's a keeper.
 
Great guns. Accurate, reliable, durable -- what more can you ask for?
I have one w/ almost 40k rounds through it and an Expert w/ almost 25k through it
 
I love mine (a HK Full Size USP .45ACP). I can honestly say that I haven't had a single failure in over 5,000 rounds (EDIT: no failures of any kind at all with any ammo - >5k rnds total since birth). IMHO it is best pistol made and is more reliable and durable than many revolvers. It is rather large, especially in girth, but very comfortable and accurate to shoot. It is however NOT an ideal CC weapon in the full size configuration. I am considering getting a P2000 Compact in .357Sig or 9mm for winter carry as they are much smaller (and the .45 compact doesn't have sufficient capacity).
 
I have one and love it, I have Sigs, Glocks, Browning's, and S&W's, every one has jammed or misfed at least once but not the H&K.It also has a bad habit of shooting in the same hole. Mine is very accurate.

I have the same issues with mine...you cant tell exactly how durable it is because it won't cause a case head separation, and you have difficulty determining the accuracy because it always shoots in the same hole. Ahhh, HKs suck. :neener:
 
I had the USP .45. If I could reach the safety better I would still own it today.

I used to load jacketed SWC loads for it and it was amazing out to 50 yards.

I traded it in on a Glock 30 because I struggled with the location of the safety, I had to reach too far back with my thumb.

The Glock 30 is fine, but it won't cycle SWC's like the USP.

The USP .45 is one of very few handguns I've owned that never failed for any reason in any way.

When I get off the unempolyment line, I'm going to get the new HK45.
 
I never shot one, but was looking at buying one and just couldn't get a good grip on it. Even though I didn't need a CCW, I picked up the HK45c which feels and shoots great.

Make sure you can grip it OK before buying.
 
Positive experience

I bought a slightly used USP45 about 7 years ago and have put about 2000 rounds through it. My observations are:

1. Built like a tank, and is accurate and reliable.
2. Too big for CCW - I use it for range or home defense. It would work for open carry, however.
3. It fits my hand fine - I have large male hands.
4. The DA trigger is heavy and long, the SA trigger is fine for accuracy.
5. Good looking gun.
6. I trust it to work every time, which I can't say for all 45s.
7. The balance and feel of the gun is different than 1911s and requires some practice to learn - but once mastered it is easy to shoot well.

I have 7 handguns in .45 acp and the USP is the most accurate of the bunch. You do need big hands to comfortably hold the gun but it is very nice if you do. Mine has been 100% reliable since day one.
 
The USPs are great pistols but the full size ones aren't very concealable in the warmer months.
 
I bought one used about 5 years ago off of the HKPro forums (actually from HKPro himself). As far as I know, I'm the 3rd owner and have no idea how many rounds have been fired through it, but I don't really care either. I didn't bother to ask, it's a USP after all. I expect it to be the last operational gun that I own a hundred years from now and all my other guns were bought new (yes, I own a Glock too. yes, I expect to be alive 100 years from now). It's a big gun so CCW isn't its strength unless you're an NFL lineman. It has all the aesthetics of an armored truck and the durability of one too. My only criticism is that he trigger isn't as crisp as I'd like it to be.
 
Three years ago, I bought an HK USP45.

Now, I own three. :D

They are excellent pistols, very accurate and quite durable.

When I "Open Carry", it is the pistol that I carry.
 
Love them.

Hate the price.


Regarding the trigger:

If you're doing a lot of slow fire shooting -- you'll notice the DA pull.

I'm not a target / bulls eye shooter.

For me it's a quick and deliberate pull of the trigger each and every time.

I don't even notice the difference anymore between DA / SA.
 
I love the USP's, you have the option of Cocked and Locked carry, DA/SA or LEM install. As far as CCW, depends on wardrobe and carry choice but I can and do carry a fullsize USP 40 and HK45 in a concealco IWB under an untucked shirt. Works great for me. Price...it only hurts for a little while, besides I compromised on my first pistol purchase and since have decided worrying over what they cost is a poor deciding factor.
 
Thanks for the info everyone. I plan on carrying it OWB with a loose shirt over it. I wear shorts almost year round (even though I'm in WV) so I can make a loose fitting shirt or hooded sweatshirt work with it.

How is H&K as far as customer service goes? Seems like everyone here would have never had to have dealt with them haha.
 
It's too over built. No civilian will ever need such a tank of a gun. Unless you're going into battle, get yourself an XD or a Glock. They're almost as reliable.

Hopefully that'll keep you from bidding against me. :p

Some believe that their "customer service motto" is : "Because you suck and we hate you"

I've never had a problem with them though the few times that I've dealt with them.
