Try as I may, I just don't like the AR15 platform. I've built a few and enjoyed shooting them. Then the new wore off and they sat in the safe until I reconfigured them or sold them. I'm down to my last AR. It is a 16" carbine with free float rails, lmt bolt/carrier, bcm upper components, magpul furniture and a bushmaster lower. I also have several accessories that I've accumulated as freebies or hand-me-downs from other AR products. I like to shoot often, but this thing has sat neglected ever since I "broke it in" with 500 rounds. It has sat in the safe, and not been to the range (which is on my property) for a single trip in months...despite having roughly 1000 rounds on hand. I guess there is only two things to do. Keep in mind, money is tight. Kids, specialist doctor visits and the need to buy an engagement ring are limiting my new firearm purchases.

Taking a class isn't an option. Action shooting may get me more involved, but if I get enough extra cash to take a class, it will be handgun related. I simply prefer shooting handguns.

  1. Sell off the AR and everything AR related. I don't like to accumulate a bunch of guns I don't shoot. My parents were hoarders of many things, so I have sort of an anti-hording complex. You could say it is a minimalist approach, but I know deep down I fear turning into my parents and being surrounded by clutter that I can't let go of.
  2. Stick all of the parts in a box, pile up all the mags in a box and stick the rifle in the back of my cramped safe. I should hang on to it because they may ban it one day.

Do you have another centerfire, semi-auto rifle that could serve the same purpose? IMHO everyone needs one in a configuration and caliber that they shoot well. I've done lots of trading/selling over the years, sometimes you come out ahead but usually the house wins.

Ultimately this is a question only you can answer.

I've always been lucky and came out ahead or broken even.

This rifle serves no purpose. I have it just so I can have an ar15. Any other reason I give you (zombies, survival, apocalypse) is just me trying to rationalize why it is taking up space.

Well, you certainly have a clarity in your thinking; you already know that if you don't sell it off, you are simply not going to use it. Good for you. I have to say though, there isn't any point in keeping it for the reason you posted. If you were to put a poll about the likelihood of a new AWB, you'll not find many people who believe another one is coming.

Sell it and all the accessories off. Use the good money for good purposes.

Good advice there. If you don't like it, don't bother to hang onto it just so you can have an AR.

Why?

Why is this a poll? You've already made up your mind. You don't like the damn thing and you've got more important priorities. Man up and take care of business

Do what's in your head & heart, brother.

My opinion doesn't matter. It ain't my gun. It's yours.

The fact that you spend most of your time explaining the negatives (why you don't use the gun, you prefer handguns, what you could do with the money, how much room it takes up, you never shoot it, it doesn't interest you, other priorities, you sold all the other ARs, etc etc etc) should give you the answer to your own question.

:)

I'm also not a big fan of the platform. I bought one back in the day, never really had a use for it (other than "range toy"). In the past few years I've realized that it's an ideal platform for transitioning a youngster from rimfire to centerfire rifles. With a collapsible stock, you can adjust the length of pull even lower than many youth rifles. It's not a heavy rifle. I mostly use a .22 conversion kit, which is cheap, fun practice for a 10-12 year old boy. If we shoot a mag or two of .223 there is still very little recoil and still very little cost.

Sell it all off and put the funds from the sell towards something useful to you.

If your looking into another rifle........ take your time and shop around for one that feels right in your paws. Do a little bit of researching and find out some info about said rifle. Then decide if it's still worth the $$ that they are asking for it.....in YOUR case.

IMO..... AR's are over rated and over priced for what they are. There are cheaper semi auto rifles out there that can be had, and there are better rifles that can be had. Just a matter of what meets your own set of requirements.

Good luck.

I bought an AR way back in the summer of 1992 just after the Rodney King riots in LA. I have only shot it three times and the last time was before 1995. I have several magazines and about 500 rounds of ammo that I keep as a just in case TSHTF ever happens.

I keep it the same way I carry a spare tire and fire extinguisher in the trunk of my car.

Take care

when I got bored with AR's I tried shooting one in 7.62x39 and bingo.. found love again.
It was the cartridge I got bored with. Not saying the commie round is better, just felt it was more of a "thumper" and maybe that's what I needed.
Maybe an AR10 will be on my Christmas list

I clicked sell it.

You yourself said you don't like the platform, and I can understand that, The only rifle I've ever actually *liked* was the Lee-Enfield ... sounds like you can use the funds to finance a platform you like. 8)

Well, they banned 'em once already, you figure it out. What will you do if/when the system collapses? Keep in mind those rifles have lots of parts just laying around.

I got a couple. But I ain't sharing.

The AR platform, love it or leave it I guess. I wasn't a fan of it either until I was in the army. Now I couldn't imagine living without one (and in fact, I won't).

I'm confused. You don't like it now, but think you might want to keep it because it might get banned one day. Do you think you'll suddenly love it once it is forbidden or just think you'll get more money for it?

I'm not sure I understand the former and the latter seems to be some pretty risky speculation. I don't expect a new AWB and if there was one, your crystal ball must be better than mine if you are sure it wouldn't prevent transfers and then you're stuck with a gun you don't like to shoot and can't sell.

As I've posted before, "We find many things to which the prohibition of them constitutes the only temptation." -- Hazlitt

i buy and sell with main thought of using what i get/have. this has helped me eliminate dead wood and invest in something more "special". if you bought right and won't take a bath$$--then sell it. :D

I'd sell it. If there's a new AWB ban comming, then you'll hear about it in advance and be able to get another EBR by then. Shooting should be fun and a gun you don't use is pointless. You can sell it off and get plenty of money for a new thing you actually want or need.

I say keep it. The one gun that I ever sold has proven to be quite difficult to repurchase now that money is tight and my wife and I had our first child. In the long run, I don't think you make enough money selling a used gun when compared against possibly repurchasing it, having the peace of mind that its in your collection, etc. Not to mention, you may develop an interest in it one day, or your child could. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Yeah, it doesn't make sense to hang onto it simply because it may be banned one day.

I voted to keep it, but it seems like you already know what you want. People always say that if you sell it now then you'll only lose money in the long run if you ever want it back, which is mostly true.

However, I always like to abide by marginal utility. Having a sandwich while you're starving is worth a whole lot more than having a steak when you're full. If you need money now and don't need the AR, then sell it. Later on, if you have the means, you can always buy it back. If you're not really strapped for cash and just want to decrease clutter, but unsure of whether you will regain an interest in ARs in the future and you have enough real estate in your guns safe, then why bother? Just hang onto it, maybe visit some AR forums and see if you can spark an interest.

I voted to keep it. However, it's your gun and your choice to make.

In an earlier post, you said that it does nothing for you: it's not a zombie gun , home defense gun, fun gun, etc. Well, do you have anything that is? You avoided the question the first time it was asked. If you do, then of course you should sell it. However, if all you have is a few pistols, and you already have a thousand rounds of .223, it might be a good idea to keep it, at least until you find a replacement.

I voted to keep it, but I view guns as investments. They hold their value well, and I don't trust liberals.

At least wait and see if Obama gets re-elected. If/when he does, you might have a chance to sell it at a higher price. Presidents always seem to get more ballsy in their second term.

What kind? I just commented on this in another thread. I'd love to have one but I've been scared away by all I read about feeding problems with them. Sorry for the thread jack.
