I currently have a ruger 10/22 carbine with a kidd single stage trigger at 1.5 lbs. It currently have a cheap 3-9 scope on it that I want to upgrade and am not quite sure what I want to get. I am considering upgrading the rifle in the future with a new stock and a lightweight bull barrel (volquartsen carbon fiber or kidd lightweight). I am thinking it will mostly be used for 20-25 yard offhand plinking at steel but definitely will be taken a little farther at times. Would you recommend a red dot sight or something like a Leupold VX2 1-4 scope? I have that leupold scope on my AR and really like it but don't have any quality red dot to really know if that might be the better choice or how much I would like it.

I'm with everyone else, for a short range walkabout rifle it's hard to beat the 2-7 range. My 10-22 wears a 6.5-20 but it's a dedicated target rifle for 50-100 yards.

Me 4 on the Leupold 2-7X rimfire. Had it on my 10/22 before I sold it....wish I had kept the scope. That scope is crystal clear and the variability would suit the type of shooting you describe.

Ok well that seems pretty definitive so far. Now the rimfire version is a Vx-1 2-7x28 and on Optics Planet is $230. While its nice that the parallax on that is adjusted shorter what do you think about going to the Vx-2 2-7x33 for $300. It doesn't have the adjusted parallax and is 10 oz vs 8 oz but has the bigger objective lens. What do you think about getting that vs the vx-1 rimfire version?

Mine was a Vx-II 2-7X 33mm. I don't know anything about the other one. I do know that the one I had was high quality...very nice scope.

I'd stick with the VX-1 due to the closer parallax adjustment and the fact you aren't gaining anything with 5MM more objective size.

Add another vote for the VX-1 2-7x28mm Rimfire. I have one on a CZ452 and really like it as a clear, compact dedicated rimfire scope.

My only other suggestion would be to check out the VX-2 3-9x33mm EFR scope. It's larger than the 2-7x28, about 2x the price but depending on your future plans, a much nicer scope. I have one of these on a different CZ452 and I shoot that rifle more often than the other one, primarily due to the clarity of the scope. I cringed a little paying for this scope, but after using it I'd buy another without hesitation.

I think the VX-2 3-9x33 EFR is my favorite rimfire scope.

If you want a bigger obj. I would go with the Weaver 3-9x32 ao rimfire scope . I like it just as good as my Leupold and it's around $250 dollars . That's what I have on my 10-22 with Talley low mount / rings .

A decent quality scope is a good idea. The VX-1, Burris F-II, and Redfield Revolution are all priced at about $200 and are my go-to recommendations for a budget scope.

I really like a 1-4X for up close and fast shooting. Precision at 50 yards might be difficult though. A 3-9X40 is about all you really need. I use mine out to 200 yards on my 10-22. On 3X it is pretty good up close too. A 2-7X32 is a decent compromise. On 7X you won't have any trouble at 50-100 yards. It isn't as fast up close as 1X, but not bad.

I put the vx1 2-7 rimfire on my 10/22. It's nice, but I wish I had bought the Weaver 2-7 rimfire instead and saved my $70.
When you buy a new barrel, I highly recommend a Kidd ultralightweight. It outshoots my cz 455.

If you decide you want cheap power, I like the Mueller apv a lot. 4.5-14 ~$130

I would give a red dot a try. A TRS-25 can be had on Amazon for $59. Throw it on your 10/22 and later try it on your AR (with riser). See if an RDS is for you.

t currently has a cheap 3-9 scope on it...
Can you tell us a bit more about that scope?
I hate to rain on any parade -- but for what you're suggesting as short-range/off-hand use, it would make sense to know what you're trying to change from....

It's a cheap Simmons scope. Even if there isn't accuracy benefits to an upgrade looking through better glass, having better more accurate sight adjustments, and an overal better made scope is more enjoyable then the cheap one. I don't really need anything too fancy just a good scope for my purposes.
