In my opinion, I think I may have found the ideal optic for a general purpose or fighting rifle in .308 Winchester.
It is Burris' Euro Diamond 1-4x24mm using a German #4 reticle with a red illuminated dot in the crosshairs. It is finished in a matte black with low adjustment knobs that can be retrofitted with tall ones for a small fee. It uses a 30mm tube, multicoated lenses, comes from the company premium line, features the Burris "forever" warranty, and is made in the U.S. It is 11.3 inches long and weighs 17 ounces.
The thing I love about this little scope is that it has a generous field of view at the 1x setting of 109 feet. This is the most I have seen in a scope like this and many of its competitors have significantly less. The reticle lets you see what is going on toward the top of your image and the dot is useful at close range or at night.
Burris describes it as...
"The 1X-4X-24mm produces the largest field of view possible for dangerous game, deep woods hunting and moving game, and at 4X this scope can deal with any big game animal at several hundred yards. The 3P#4 ElectroDot reticle and turret-mounted illumination switch are the finishing touches..."
It's street price is in the $500 range...about the same as an Aimpoint dot sight.
