Hello Everyone,

In my opinion, I think I may have found the ideal optic for a general purpose or fighting rifle in .308 Winchester.

It is Burris' Euro Diamond 1-4x24mm using a German #4 reticle with a red illuminated dot in the crosshairs. It is finished in a matte black with low adjustment knobs that can be retrofitted with tall ones for a small fee. It uses a 30mm tube, multicoated lenses, comes from the company premium line, features the Burris "forever" warranty, and is made in the U.S. It is 11.3 inches long and weighs 17 ounces.

The thing I love about this little scope is that it has a generous field of view at the 1x setting of 109 feet. This is the most I have seen in a scope like this and many of its competitors have significantly less. The reticle lets you see what is going on toward the top of your image and the dot is useful at close range or at night.

Burris describes it as...

"The 1X-4X-24mm produces the largest field of view possible for dangerous game, deep woods hunting and moving game, and at 4X this scope can deal with any big game animal at several hundred yards. The 3P#4 ElectroDot reticle and turret-mounted illumination switch are the finishing touches..."

It's street price is in the $500 range...about the same as an Aimpoint dot sight.

IMHO, a 1-4x scope is d@mn near perfect for a MBR. At 1x, it's fast with both eyes open for close range work, and at 4x, it will handle shots out to 600 yards, which is a realistic LR shot with a MBR. I've got a 1-4x Redfield on my Remington 1100 deer gun, that I will be sorely tempted to put on my FAL when it arrives.

Is the dot adjustable for brightness and bright enough in the day time to use it like a red dot?

I have a Leupold 1.5x5 on one of my rifles and like the lower powered scopes much better. As was mentioned, they are very fast to shoot with at closer ranges. I actually like both the dot sights and scopes mounted forward better.

I believe it is bright enough given the 11 position adjustment knob for brightness, but I plan on calling Burris before buying it.

Excellent point though for something to watch out for.

Called Burris

I called Burris and they said you could see the dot during daylight hours. It was designed this way to ensure you could use it against a dark background that might obscure the black reticle (e.g., black bear).

For that price I'd say it sounds like it might be a winner. About 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of an ACOG with .308 reticle and a Docter red dot. Couple hundred bucks cheaper than a Leupold CQ/T x1-3 variable red dot.

Would be very interested in hearing a range report on this scope if you get one. What kind of rifle are you thinking of mounting it on?

I'm seriously considering the purchase of the Burris. If I do I will provide everyone with a nice range report.

Initially I wanted to put it on a new, custom AR-10 I am having built as a general purpose rifle with its "field profile" 20-inch barrel.

I have recently came into some money and am considering buying one or two other .308 rifles I want...a JLD PTR-91 and/or DSA FAL.

As the AR-10 has a Krieger match barrel one could make a very good case for putting it on either of the two latter rifles while putting something with a higher magnification on the AR-10 for longer range work.

Thoughts?

They are great scopes, I use a cheaper Burris on a .308 Ruger RSI and the same scope on my .50 Beowulf, they have held up well with both rifles.

Okay, I have my PTR-91. I recently got a scope mount for it. The iron sights are still useable below the mount. I am not sure I would want a full time 1-4X scope. I was thinking of something more powerful myself. I guess I was interested in really seeing what this rifle could do at extended ranges rather than just MBR uses. I have cheap Simmons 1.5-5X on in it now so I can start playing. We'll see.
