What barrel length is optimal for a .45acp carbine? By optimal I mean long enough to get the most out of the .45acp but also shot enough to make a handy carbine.

In that case, 8-10", just like the UMP. Personally, I'd go 10" and have it threaded for a silencer. :)

Might want to reconsider what silencer you're after. SWR makes a better .45 can for this purpose than GemTech, though it's a screw-on. You can order it without the LCD, and instead just get it as a thread-on.

HEMS 2 .45 silencer

Is there a huge difference between the two? I am very attracted to the idea of a quick mount and also not having to worry about damaging the thread on the can/barrel.

be advised that quick attach are rarely quick detach. personally, i'm not buying any more QD cans until somebody makes one that doesn't suck. of the 5 cans i have currently, the threaded ones work best.

How about the new Surefire cans? They seem to have gotten good reviews but I'm not sure if they are for sale to the public or not.

So the UMP 8" should be fine? Or should I go 10"? Is the extra 2" necessary for the barrel to be threaded?
