Hey guys:

My brother just gifted me a Benchmade 9052 SBK auto knife (http://www.bladehq.com/item--Benchmade-9052SBK-AFO-II--3479).

I can't legally carry an auto here in Texas, so it'll basically live in my house as a glorified letter opener. That said, I'd like to change out the blade, if this can be accomplished without too much expense. The original blade has been enthusiastically used and the blacking is well scratched. I don't really like serrations or tanto-style blades, either.

I'd like to replace it with a simple un-serrated, black, drop-point blade. I called BladeHQ, and they said to contact Benchmade. I called Benchmade, and they said that they couldn't just send me a blade for me to install myself, I'd have to send the knife in (and deal with all the related legal hurdles of mailing an auto knife). While my brother is military and could legally mail it to the manufacturer, I'd feel really ungrateful asking him to "fix" his very generous gift - do I have any other options? I'm not concerned about voiding the warranty, I'd just like to pay for a different blade and replace it myself, if I can do so without too much trouble...

Thanks!

What Benchmade told you is the law concerning switchblades.
They wouldn't even send me a spring for one of mine that broke.

They most certainly won't sell you a blade they would have no assurance you know how to change and insure safety afterwards.

The black coating can be pretty easily polished off.
But that would not address the serreted blade you don't want.

Other then that, having a military, LEO officer, or dealer send it in is the only option I know of.
