Ordering $50,000 a week....

Stopped into the local gun store today to see what's on the shelf. Salesman said they are ordering $50,000 a week in ammo and components....unfortunately they're only getting about $9000 of the order delivered each week.....and that's usually gone in a day or two. Customers are scooping up ammo and components off pallets before they even get it on the shelf.

Went to my local shop today. They had several thousand match small pistol primers, magnum large pistol primers, large rifle primers and quite a bit of powder.

Of course, I needed small rifle primers, and they were out.

They also had a huge stack of cases of .223 ammo among others.

A friend of mine spent $13,000 there today on two rifles, scopes and ammo.

A friend of ours is a VP at the distributor Ellett Brothers (to give you an idea of their size, long before the "scare" they did, on average, about a half million dollars a day, wholesale - on election day, and every work day for ten days afterward, they were flirting with $3 million a day).

Even they, despite their huge size, are down to rationing shipments to their dealers in very modest quantities and have been fore some time. I'll fire of an email and ask if she sees relief coming anytime soon.

I understand there's still a ton of people who want ammo, compnents, etc in quantity. However, real "demand" is defined as the desire for a product coupled with the ability to pay.

I, for one, am all but out of serious $ to throw at major purchases of any kind. Aren't people, no matter how much we want all this stuff, running out of the discretionary income to get it?

Why? Before everything became so hard to find, I'd routinely buy a big lot of stuff if I liked it. I once bought 50 boxes of Win 9mm from Walmart as they had a good price on it. And my wife is under standing orders to buy all the .17 HMR ammo 3 local stores have if she sees it under $10/50 for the Hornady stuff. I bought a couple of boxes of some Federal bulk pak .223 that WallyWorld had, I liked it, so I bought another 2,000 rounds. It was as cheap as reloading decent varmint rounds.

Buying lots of ammo is nothing new for some of us, the difference is now EVERYONE is doing it.

I tend to think a lot is going on plastic so judgment day will be down the road, especially if jobs continue to get cut.

While it might be going on credit, and while I'm sure many people who stocked up into order to cash in on the crazy are going to have to unload sooner rather than later, at the same time I've seen firearm prices falling in the marketplace and reduced demand. Hopefully, ammunition and reloading supplies will follow the curve once the back-orders are filled.

When supply comes back, the following scenario may arise...

...maybe:

• Ammo prices come down a little, but not as low as before. So a box of .223 Remington 55 grain fmj ammo is about $14.
• But component prices do NOT come back down. So primers are always $35 per thousand, bulk 55 grain fmj bullets are $80 per thousand, powder is $18 per pound. Assuming you get brass for free, loading a box of 223 Rem with 55g fmj costs about $13.
• Suddenly reloading is hardly worth it any more.

Same for 45acp, 9mm, 38 Special, and all the other common calibers. Only uncommon calibers are worth loading.

Ants, using your numbers, in cents: 3.5 (primer) + 6.5 (powder) + 8 (bullet) = 18 / round.

When was the last time 5.56 was at or below 18 / round? Cheapest production 5.56 I've seen is 30 / round and I buy PRVI stuff at 40 / round shipped.
