I moved to Oregon last week and would like to hunt deer later this year. I am from Virginia. About all I know is I need an out of state hunting license and deer tags. I also do not have a hunter safety course.

Where do I even begin?

I agree with @Dog Soldier on checking out that link. Then, if you have more questions, look up your LOCAL fish and wildlife department's phone number and call them. Quite often, hunter safety has an age requirement but if you're new to hunting in general, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take the class regardless. Depending on state residency regulations you may still qualify for a resident permit, here, I believe it's only 3 months......check that out too.

Oregon is known for its liberal practices. Among them is/was the ability to register to vote just by signing the intention of establishing residency. That is how that Indian-based cult took over Antelope, Oregon about 25 yrs. ago and put all their people in office. The state has probably changed it but residency for hunting could be as short a time as 3-6 mos. If so, get moving to have everything in place for your resident's hunting license. It could save you much money.

ADDENDUM: Oregon requires 6 mos.of residency before applying for a residential license.

"Oregon Residents
Obtaining hunting, combination, or Sports Pac license.

  • A person who has resided in Oregon at least six months immediately prior to the date of making application for a license, tag or permit issued by the State Fish and Wildlife Commission. Temporary absence from the state for a purpose other than establishing residency outside the state shall not be considered in determining whether a person meets the residency requirement.
  • These requirements are waived for certain active members of the uniformed services and for some foreign exchange students (see OAR 635-010-0015(4) for details). Submitting a false application is a crime."

You have time, mrbladedude. This is only February, deer season isn't until October. But call the local Fish and Game Department and find out about taking a Hunter Safety Course. If you didn't have a hunting license back in Virginia, I'm pretty sure it's going to be required regardless of your age - unless you're ancient, like I am. However, there are several different ways of taking the course, at least there are in Idaho, and I'm guessing Oregon is about the same.
BTW, when I was growing up and deer hunting in SW Idaho, right on the Idaho/Oregon border, you wouldn't believe the number of large, mule deer bucks we had to pass up because they were on the Oregon side of the fence.:)
