I am trying with very little luck to find outdoor ranges/clubs near or around Kansas City. Trying to find more options to shot, currently go to 2-3 great indoor ranges regularly and regularly go to a nearby Trap Range, but am looking for outdoor options for shooting handguns, rifles, etc...

Look up the Tri County Gun Club, it's on the Kansas side near Lenexa. Not far from KC unless you are on the east side . I don't know if they are currently accepting members though.
And Welcome to The High Road.

Lake City range is north of Blue Springs.
Parma Woods range is northwest of Parkville.
These are both highly regulated ranges with range officers on duty. There is a small fee per hour, cease fire is called 4 times per hour, paper targets only, no silhouette targets, no rapid fire, etc.

There is a good range at Pigeon Hill Conservation Area southeast of Saint Joseph, MO that is open daylight hours and does not have range officers on duty, so you have to look out for yourself. It can get crowded on the weekends and can be nerve racking. It's a nice place to shoot if you can go early in the morning on a weekday. It has 25, 50, & 100 yard ranges. No fees.

I've been a member of Pioneer for about 10 years. I think annual membership dues are $200 now, plus there is a fee ($100 I think) to cover background check and membership processing when you first join. Pioneers has a lot of organized disciplines and matches. The outdoor range is east of Lee"s Summit about 15 miles. There is a small indoor range between Raytown and Lee's Summit.

If you like to shoot handguns, come up north to Show Me Shooters in Claycomo and shoot bowling pins with me on Thursday nights at 6pm. You can shoot 8 tables of 5 bowling pins for $15. You do not need to be a member of their range to shoot the pin matches. There are no prizes, we just do it for fun.

Thanks for the info, have been interested in pioneer gun club, but I have to get recommendations from existing members to be allow in. Unfortunately have only met one former member in my travels. Hopefully will meet more members in the future.

Was a member at show me shooters for awhile a few years ago, switched to another range because show me seemed to be crowded/busy at the times I was going. Didn't know they had a bowling pin shot there. That actually sounds like a lot of fun. I will have to stop by and give it a try.

Haven't been to any of the MDC managed ranges but have had a few people tell/warn me about the restrictions. Always sounded like a bit to much hassle for me. The unmanaged MDC ranges would be nice, but don't have a lot of shooting buddies to go with me and watch my back.

Rob, if you come to the bowling pin match, I usually get there around 6 or a few minutes after. My name is Doug.

If you reload, I feel I should warn you that it is hard to save your brass if you are shooting a pistol at the pin match.

Once in a while the guys that run the match will be out of town and we will not have the pin match that week. I don't know of any cancelations coming up, but if you decide to come sometime later you can always call the range and confirm.

I've gone to Pigeon Hill quite a bit in the last 10 years. Some weekends are VERY busy since it's free. If it's busy, the pistol range is the place to avoid. The 50 yard and 100 yard ranges are rarely too busy to find a spot, except just before deer rifle season when a lot of hunters are out checking the zero on their rifles.

If you want a more organized range and don't mind paying, there's Mill Creek Rifle Club and Hillsdale Shooting Range. Mill Creek is member only but they have scheduled events that non-members can attend http://www.millcreekrc.org/cms/ I've never been to Mill Creek but by the map on their website it looks like it'd definitely be worth the cost and trouble of getting a membership http://www.millcreekrc.org/cms/index.php/range-map Hillsdale offers memberships but since it's on public land they have to be open to the public (for a fee) for X Number of hours per month http://www.hillsdalerange.org/

Another good unstaffed MDC range is Golden Valley Shooting Park near Clinton, MO. While not officially staffed, it's near the MDC offices for the lake and staff drives by on occasion to make sure everything is on the up and up. It keeps the overtly stupid and unsafe shooters out. There's also a trap field, however you now have to bring your own thrower and clays.

I'm not a fan of the staffed MDC ranges around here, in particular Parma Woods. New range users, not even necessarily new shooters, are so worried about being thrown out over some tiny administrative rule infraction that it often leads to some of the worst gun handling I've ever seen. They also will not allow steel jacketed ammunition due to it supposedly causing excess wear to the artificial berm backstop. Yet copper jacketed .50 BMG is just fine.
