Anyone know of any good public outdoor ranges near Chicago? I've been hitting a few of the indoor ranges but, let's face it, there's nothing like shooting outdoors. Thanks!

The only public outdoor range I am aware of is Buffalo Range all the way out in Ottawa.

Buffalo Range

Where in the city are you? There are some clubs up north in Wisconsin that might meet your needs also.

Covered 100/75/50 yard range.

I'm on the north side, not too far from Wrigley. I'd be willing to drive a bit if it's a good spot. I may have to check out Buffalo Range; I saw that there was a shoot out there on Sunday.

I won't be out there this weekend due to work.

When I am not on call I do try to get out there.

If you want to hook up some weekend shoot me an IM. I know most of the Range Officers and will introduce you to them.

Last weekend I got the chance to shoot about five clips through some guys M1 Garand. Alot of nice folks go shooting out there.

come out to the conservation club in Bristol wisconsin. It is just west of kenosha about 5 miles west of 94 on hwy 50.

GoRon-
You said 'some' clubs in wisconsin. Are there any others that you know about in this area outside of conservation club in Bristol? I love Conservation club , but you are only allowed to fire 1 round at a time there...

There is an outdoor range much closer to Chicago than Ottawa IL. It is just accross the Wisconsin border, Called Bristol.

Check out this website:

They shoot just about everything there, within limits. There are also a few clubs too...... They have links attached....

Now there is at least 8 Indoor ranges in the Chicago Area....

Does Bristol have a pistol range?

I do know they have a one round rule in center fire rifles so that kind of steals some of the joy from the AR-15 experience.

There is a range that is by invite only that gets mentioned on the Illinois board over at ARFCOM. I never pursued it because it isn't any closer to me than Buffalo. A friend of mine is a new member there so I will be checking it out this spring/summer. He also frequents Bristol so I may check it out also.

The nice thing about Buffalo is I can practice drawing from the holster and shooting multiple targets at the pistol range.

As far as rifles go there are two places to shoot at Buffalo. At the covered range it is slow fire only. At the pit it is anything goes.

I've been to Bell's Guns, Maxon and GAT Guns so far and was most impressed with GAT. Too bad it's the longest drive. I'm going back to Maxon this week but wouldn't go back to Bell's. YMMV. At this point, I hit indoor ranges about every other month but have family in southern Indiana and shoot every time I'm down there.

You should check out Midwest Guns in Lyons.

I shoot practical pistol there.

The range officer that runs the practices offers a class for 85 bucks. This gives him a chance to make sure you are safe and that you have a good grasp of the fundementals.

Once you have completed his course you can join us when we shoot twice a month.

This is self defense and IDPA type training.

Lessee....

St. Charles has a very nice public sporting clays course, if you are in to that sort of thing. It' a little jaunt out 290/88, but it's doable. Nonmembers can use the pistol range during the regular bowling pin and 'three gun' type shoots.

NPCCC is a very well maintained club, and is actually a bit closer to the city than Bristol. Again, nonmembers can shoot any of the numerous competitive events (these are among some of the best run matches in the area, IMHO).

Ron, Bristol has a 'rifle/pistol' range with stations at 25, 50, 100 and 200 yards. Obviously, most of the pistol shooters spend time at the 25 and 50 yard lines. Note that Bristol's raised its rates again for nonmembers to $20.

lamazza, RCLRC is not too far from Bristol. I've only ever shot matches there, so I don't know their policy on membership/public use.

AI, if you're looking for a public rifle/pistol range within driving distance of the city where you can just shoot targets (i.e., not competition) - - Bristol and Buffalo are your best options, as far as I'm aware.

Check out Gun World in Bensenville. They have 3 indoor ranges. It is on the south side of O'Hare airport..... (soon to be gone if or when the expansion happens). they are west off I294 on Irving Park road......
