I'm trying to find some ammo deals on the web, for some calibers I'm not crazy about reloading (namely 9mm, and 223). After finding some good deals, you then find out you get hit with ridiculous shipping charges. It's hardly even worth it to order online anymore. Plus the fact that the gov, or state govs, are licking their chops over the coming sales taxes on every internet sale.

Some places, such as lead bullet makers, charge a "bulk" rate of something around $8 for up to seventy pounds of bullets. However, most places, such as Midway, charge way more than that, for orders that are way less weight.

seems to be a ripoff. Jacked up shipping charges, to make their "low prices" seem ok.

(notice I didn't even mention the hazmat fee on primers & powder... oops)

I remember a time when shipping charges were the cost of doing business for mail order companies. Not so any more. That's why I've taken to buying ammo at local gun shows now.

Unfortunately, with the cost of fuel, and such, they're probably not as outrageous as it appears. Since everything is done by weight, and ammo is heavy,I honestly doubt they're making (mcuh) money on shipping charges.
I wait, and buy most of my ammo at the local gunshow. Even w/ sales tax, this is usually cheapest for me, at least when buying "in bulk".

:banghead: Ammo is not shipped via USPS flat rate boxes:banghead: , :D whereas bulk bullets can be:D . Only UPS or FED Ex ship ammo. Get over it, things cost money. Energy costs are up, labor costs, and raw materials.

Sportsmandguide has a max of $20 shipping costs. The more ammo you buy, the more you save. Midway, on the other hand, likes to rape their customers on ammo shipping. Shipping on a case of 500 7.62rds for $39? gimme a break! UPS doesn't cost that much. And if you do keep it under 75#, but over something like 25 it is in a different price category and not THAT expensive!

I now just go through the checkout process to see what places charge for shipping. Usually the cheaper the ammo prices, the more the shipping. I don't mind paying shipping, but I despise attempting to be gouged.

Ammoman.com has shipping included in the price. Not bad, but not the best prices either. Very simple to order from though.

Is there an extra surcharge for that little ORM-D sticker on boxes of loaded ammo?
Shipping can be hefty. Just check to see if after shipping it is still a better deal. If enough people do that, the people charging outrageous shipping will either rethink it or close. It's like those punks on ebay that will sell something for $1.99 with $20 shipping.

yeah, that reminds me of an ebay record seller (vinyl records) who sells all his crappy records for .01, plus 6.99 shipping.

Natchez

I've always found Natchez to have really great shipping charges. I don't buy huge amounts, but I commonly order 500 rds of 9mm with a couple other items (cleaner, grips, minor accessories) and I think the most I've ever paid for shipping is around $15.

I feel that's pretty darn reasonable. In some cases, even after shipping it costs less than it would have had I bought locally. And the selection is certainly better.

Well, beyond shifty practices of various retailers (using shipping for profit instead of, well, shipping) this is sort of a non-argument.

Go to the post office or UPS store and try to mail somebody a box of lead. See how much it'll cost you these days...

I've found natchezss shipping charges to be very close to what I suspect actual shipping charges for UPS are. Flat rate USPS boxes aren't a fair comparison.

Check this

Ammoman.com no shipping on orders over $100.00 he's got quite an inventory, ships on time what you see is what you pay

If it will fit in a flat rate envelope (even if it's already in a box), it's $4.05. Need more space? I'm guessing you could get close to 100 lbs of lead in a flat rate box, for the whopping cost of $8.10

That being said, I'd like someone that's whining about shipping prices to define "outrageous" or "ridiculous" or any of the other silly terms they toss around.

Doesn't the contradicition within your post make your head hurt? You didn't find a good deal, you only THOUGHT you did. Once you actually completed your research, you discovered it wasn't as good as you thought, so now you're pissed at the seller because YOU got emotional before it was time???

there isn't anything for me to get over. I wasn't specifically condemning all online retailers for jacking up shipping charges, I was also commenting in general about high shipping charges, whether it's the shipping companies faults or the online sellers faults.

Let's see, a while back I was going to order a rifle cleaning rod from Midway, on sale for around $22. Hmmm... shipping $10... ok let's forget that !

One online place I visited this morning, that includes shipping in it's prices, had Winchester USA 100-round boxes of 9mm for something like $28.50... yeah right!! What is that, more than double priced, right?

A box of 100 .30 cal 150gr bullets at Midway is $18-whatever. Ok, decent price... about the same as the local Sportsman's Warehouse. Let's check shipping... cheapest is USPS at $8.70, ouch. Next cheapest is UPS at 9.30. No thanks. Any local gun store, even high priced ones, will be cheaper.

I assume local business, including gun stores, have to pay to have stuff delivered to their retail establishments. So for comparison we have a box of 100 30 caliber bullets from Midway, after shipping for $27+. Local Sportsman's after sales tax would be around $19.50.

I never checked the local gun shows for ammo prices, will have to do that at the show next month...

You have to realize that many brick and motar stores have delivery via truck frt or some whsle operations have their own truck that deliver product.

There are plenty of places to buy from Midway is not the best priced nor the best with shipping either.

Shipping odd shaped products some times do incur extra charges.

Go check out Graf and Sons for stuff, as they have just handling charge.

If you want to complain that is fine, but a person has to be saavy enough to know when it is whining vs being ignorant.
