I purchased a Weatherby Athena (SKB gun) used. It's in really great shape but I know nothing about the interior of the action. How often does that need to be attended to, cleaning, lubrication, etc? I do the maintenance on all of my guns but have never done a O-U shotgun. If I open the cover, will anything come flying out? I would like to look in there. BTW, I have NO gun shops remotely close to me right now or I would just take it there.

Go to Youtube and type this in the search box....cleaning o/u shotgun

You will see days worth of videos that at least will give you the basics. BE sure to watch several videos and not just one or two. Most folks just remove the forearm and barrel to start cleaning. Taking the stock off and prying around in the innards is not for the beginner. Just clean the barrels and put a drop or two of oil on the lockup portions. Reassemble the barrels and the forearm and you should be good to go unless there is something wrong with the firearm already. You might even find your own model of shotgun in a video. Good luck!

i take the butt stock off and flush with a good gun cleaner and then blow dry and lightly lube. maybe a redue at 2500 rounds.

I pull a oiled Boresnake through the barrels after every shoot. I also wipe down the hinge points and inside the receiver to get the old grease off, then regrease.

I might pull the stock and soak the receiver in Ed's Red once a year or so. Once a year, is 5k to 10k rounds depending on the gun.

Every once in a few years I pull the butt stock off and soak the receiver and its innards in either kerosene or paint thinner for a few hours or overnight. Then I use low air pressure and lightly blow out the cleaning fluid. Then I spray throughly with gun oil, let it sit overnight, and blow out the excess oil. Take very good care not to blow a pin out of its location when doing the air blowing. Some guns have very loose pins. I do not like to use gun cleaner or brake cleaner or any of the aggressive cleaners that leave the gun parts dry for this cleaning. Too little lubrication is a bad thing in a O/U.
