The legacy of the 1911 rest soley on the .45 ACP cartridge, not
the 1911 design, which JMB improved on with his masterpiece- the
P-35. Should the P-35 been designed in .45 caliber, you would have
seen the demise of the 1911 long ago.

False. The HP trigger is no where near as good as the 1911. I have both. The browning's reset is long and the trigger is normally hard. The 1911 has earned its respect so has the glock. Overated I would say the Mak is grossly overated. Bad sights, weak round, overall pos.

I guess I will make one more comment on this! I voted for 1911 as most overated. I will stand by that. However, I will also state that I do like the 1911. Everyone keeps mentioning SWAT teams, Marine Recon, and all of the other "door kickers" who rely on the 1911. Also frequently mentioned are all the pro shooters on the IPSC circuit who use the 1911. All of that is TRUE. It doesn't change the facts much though. None of these people are shooting box stock 1911's....... None of them! All of these people have highly tuned pistols. Out of the box, 1911's usually need some tinkering unless you are going to shoot ball only. I have some very good 1911's; nice shooters, reliable. I have also spent some small amount of time and money getting them that way. That said, all of the 1911's I have ever fired were reliable with ball; that is what they were designed for. If you like to tinker, the 1911 is a great gun. If you don't, it can be your worst choice; thus the vote as "highly overated". PS: Mine are not for sale though!
That's not quite true, unless you define "stock" as "mil-spec 1911A1 as issued by the Armed Forces." I read "stock" and think "unmodified mass-produced 1911 from a major manufacturer, readily available for purchase to anyone."
The FBI HRT uses box-stock Springfield Professionals. (The fact that Springfield built the gun to the FBI's specs doesn't change the fact that it's stock, readily obtainable off the rack by Joe Civilian.)
If that's too esoteric, expensive, or "cheating", Tacoma PD uses stock Kimber Pro Carry IIs. That's a box stock 1911 straight out of Kimber's lineup. And LAPD SWAT, as mentioned, uses stock Kimber Custom TLEs.
