Robbery at Monroe County Gun Store

A man was severely beaten in a violent robbery in Monroe County Friday morning. The thieves got a way with nearly 30 handguns. Now federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are searching for three men responsible.

A and A Sporting Goods store off Route 611 in Pocono Township opened at 10:00 Friday morning. Six minutes later, police say, two masked men walked in while a third sat in a car outside and waited for them to return. Police say the two men inside attacked the store owner, Andy Zafiropoulous, 55, with a rifle described as an AK 47.

"The person who had the AK 47 was the one beating with a gun, mot to say the other person wasn't hitting. We're not sure," says Pocono Township Police Chief Rick Staples.

Police say although Zafiropoulous was conscious when they arrived, he had suffered severe head injuries and was flown to a hospital.

Police tape ran all the way across the Peddlers Village parking lot in front of A and A Sporting Goods". Inside, crime scene investigators looked for clues to lead them to the robbers.

Those who know the owner say they are puzzled as to how this could of happened. "(He's) grandfather like but aware that's why I'm surprised that someone caught him off guard. His physical appearance didn't scare you but he's a gun shop owner,"says customer Kevin Hay.

"He's fair and honest and we were friends," says Bob Tuohy. He stops by weekly to check on what's new in the store. He knows and likes the owner and says he's upset at what's happened, but not completely shocked. "He's in a high risk capacity. It attracts good elements and bad elements. Guns are an easily sold commodity,"added Tuohy.

Zafiropoulous is in satisfactory condition.

The search is on for the three men wanted for the crime. If you have any information that could help, you are asked to call police.

Bad news Steve - closer to home than some incidents.

I am not sure if my local FFL has gotten to carry yet but I have nagged him about it - thinking exactly of this type of situation. Smaller communities are no less likely to get targeted.

Several years ago, a gun shop here in Wilkes-Barre was robbed by a couple of thugs. I do believe they were eventually caught, and I do know that the three owners won't let that happen again. ;)
