Interesting phenomenon.....

Got my custom High Power, now is running maybe about 2500 rounds through it...Hammer, Trigger Sear are all C&S, sear bar is original FN as is mainspring. Recoli sping is Extra power. No shock buff. Tigger was set to 4.5 pounds.

Gun has been tefloned, athough there is no teflon on hammer notch surface or on sear surface where it locks into hammer....all other surfaces tefloned..

Today when shooting three strings rather slowly it doubled twice, best as I recall on the 8 or 9th round....took it off the pistol ranged and went on to the rifle ranng and hosed off about 4 mags worth as fast as I could pull the trigger and it didnt do it again, although once the hammer followed catching in the safety notch...

Im wondering if any of you guys have had any probs with C&S HP parts? I guess now Im gonna take it apart and see what I can find, hope I dont have to replace anything get it tefloned again.....

Thinking also of taking all teflon off the entire sear...

Thoughts....

Double, Double, Toil and Trouble

Howdy Wildman,

Sounds like maybe a hammer hook problem...maybe. You can find out pretty quick if you've got a vise and a dial indicator. Clamp the gun in the vise, and cock it.
Zero the dial indicator on the hammer and S-L-O-W-L-Y squeeze the trigger
while you watch the indicator. If the needle moves toward the negative side of zero...the hammer hook angles are likely wrong. May be that the sear angle isn't in agreement with the hammer hooks...even if they're okay. Short sear, maybe?
Not too well-boned up on Hi-Powers...This might be best answered by Stephen Camp or Jim Keenan. Dunno if the Old Fuff is a Hi-Power mechanic...

Anyway, if the dial heads for negative zero, you've gotta problem...and it very well could be the C&S parts aren't compatible with the hammer and sear pin hole spacing in your frame.

Luck!

Before doing anything rash, detail strip the frame and put a little more forward bend on the sear (flat) spring. Over time they sometimes "relax" or take a set. If this has happened it, along with your extra power recoil spring may be the cause. At this point I wouldn't remove any of the teflon coating unless it is on the hammer/sear contact edges - which you say it isn't.

Edited to add: Also be sure the sear bar in the slide isn't binding or getting stuck.

Hmmm

First check is gonna be that sear bar...that could be why the phenomonen occurred more times under slow fire than rapid fire....the theory being the fat movememnbt of the slide once after the other jars the bar loose....even the doubling is only two shots...wonder if there is enough teflon buildup on the bar and the slide to cause a bit of sticking.......

Also wondering if the trigger bar (that what they call it?) is a bit too long...when I fist instllaed it it was dragging so I shortened it a hair...but maybe not enough

But the question is...why now?

I will have to leave this one up to O.F. and Mr. Camp. I do not care for Hi-Powers. I think they are a wonderful machine, but if I want to carry a 380 magnum, I have a collection of two 9mm Star BM's and Super Modelo 38 Super I can use when I don't care much about surviving a gunfight on certain days. My favorite Hi-Power Smith is Don Williams and I am sure if you give him a call, he would tell you exactly what to do to fix it. 1-928-636-1691 will get him on the land line. He is a real guy, like me.

Hello. Sorry to be so late responding, but I just saw this one. I'd first check the sear spring. Those things can be lightened inadvertently when being removed and then replaced. I'd tension it a bit and see if that takes care of it.
I've never seen and seldom heard of C&S sears and hammers getting out of whack when used together.

Is your Hi Power with or without the internal firing pin safety? If an older one w/o, it could be the sear lever bumping the sear when the gun goes back into battery. I've only seen what you're describing happen when triggers are at 4 lbs or a bit less from that, however.

Best.
