I recently picked up a Mossberg 500 slugster that had been abused.
Broken stock, painted an ugly camo job, broken rear sight, etc. Pretty much I went home with the ugliest girl from the dance.
I've gotten most of the paint off with carb cleaners and a blue scrub pad, but I'm still finding a bit more here and there as I work on it.
What concerns me is under that paint is some metal that has been stained brown. It isn't rust as much as a rust stain, i.e. no pits just a brown patina like stain.
I'm going to do another complete disassembly this weekend and try getting the rest of the paint off, but how do I fix those areas that are stained without completely removing any finish left on those areas?
Primarily the are on the magazine tube closest to the reciever.
Thanks.

Over the years bluing will turn brown if not cared for. One thing you can do is degrease the steel parts and use some bluing such as Oxpho from Brownels.

The receiver on the 500's is made from some aluminum alloy(?) and that cand be finished with Dura-coat or a semi-gloss paint.

I don't think there's anything to be gained by trying to save any of the bluing (brown) underneath any of the paint. If the firearm is in the condition as described, you may as well strip everything and refinish the complete gun. You're never going to be able to match the parts anyway.
