While reading someones thread I heard one member speak of using "Pam" as a cleaner for black powder and as a gun oil. Has anyone else use "Pam" as such, how did it work for Yawl???

PAM is a 'synthetic' vegetable oil and works as well as any such oil. That is to say, some really like it and some don't. Soap and water are less expensive.

I use it as a lube on my stubborn guns that foul alot (Paterson, Remingtons). It keeps them going and going (I spray it on the cylinder pins). I really don't use it as a cleaner, but I do spray it down the barrel while at the range - I'm amazed at what a good job it does of scrubbing out the crud. I still use hot soapy water for cleaning, and Bore Butter as an internal lube.
As far as cost- I bought the store's generic brand and saved a little.

For some reason, the Colts, other than the Paterson, do not like it. I think it might clog up in the grooved cylinder pins.

I find that after a long shooting session, when the guns get really hot, I spray the inside of the barrel with Pam.

While shooting with one hand, I am mixing in a bowl, three cups of flour, one half cup of milk, one cup of water, some salt, a teaspoon of baking powder, and some banana extract. When this is mixed and the gun is so caked that I cannot shoot it anymore, I spray the barrel with Pam and put the dough in it.

.44 caliber guns take upwards of ten minutes to cook the dough. The time is shorter for .36 guns.

Push the cooked breadstick out of the barrel. Because of the Pam cooking spray it will not stick.

Scrape off any residual black powder. Put the still hot breadstick on a sheet of aluminum foil which has kosher salt (the big salt grain stuff) on it. Roll the stick so that it picks up the salt. Let cool a bit and voila,

Banana Bread Pretzel Sticks.

I find that Pam Low Calorie also works well for those people on a diet.

PS: :neener::evil::D:neener:

So, Doc, in your medical opinion, is the PAM healthier than Crisco? What about adding cornmeal or Cream of Wheat as a gap filling snack?
Does KY come in a spray?

Ram some Pam & Spam together in the hot cylinders and you can cook up some .45 cocktail weiners.
Add some percussion caps and folks can shoot the little weiners right into their mouths.
Now that's a new kind of Pez dispenser! :p
Thanks Doc!

Sorry, Pohill, I'm only good for legal opinions. Now, I have called restaurants for reservations, but Burger King says I really don't have to call in advance.
:D

Articap, I'm shocked. :what: Pointing a gun at a person? Shameful. You point the gun at a BOWL and shoot the cocktail weenie into it!

Now if you are shooting a half-stocked rifle, you can roll the dough out into a long string, and then wrap it around the barrel in a spiral to cook. When you take it off, you put some butter into the hole of the spiral and it will melt all the way down.

(seriously, this one is a Boy Scout cooking idea for sticks and biscuit dough at a campfire. You can use jelly or butter or anything else down the hole of the spiral) :)

I hope PAM never catches on as a BP lube - keep the price down for me. Look at what happened when I told people to use lead for roundballs...
I also invented the Internet.

Ifin Pohill says Pam works I know it does...altough I got hungry readin' the recipes I'm gonna try it even though I said I'd never use nothin' but lube pills.
The only reason I din't try it on my Paterson was cause Pohill has it...we traded for my beloved "Sophia A. Uberti" 1858 Rem .44...But now that I got another Paterson I can try Pam out if Sophia don't find out(the damn lube pills work good on Rems ifin you make like I told ya) HeeHee! Jus' funnin' Pohill

OK, now I'm really ticked off. Not because people are making fun of my PAM lube, but because I can't find my reading glasses to read the ingredients on the can.
OK...got 'em.
"Soybean oil, soy lecithin, water and propellant."
Now, check the ingredients of Bore Butter...
Hmmm...not listed.
I'm guessing beeswax, paraffin, PAM and Ben Gay.
Bore Butter is "food grade rated"
PAM has no fat, no cholesterol, no sodium, no protein.

My legal advisor, my cousin Vinnie (the quintessential Bambino, who I have known since I was a yute) suggested that I do not promote the use of PAM as a lube for BP firearms since it is listed as FLAMMABLE on the label. If you do need a PAM fix, I suggest watching old Bay Watch reruns with a tube of that Ben Gay stuff near by.

Hey pohill, at least no one is calling you "Crisco" Ill tell you this, if they start refering to you as "Pam" they dont mean you are a girly man. Pam is fat in the can

Fat in the can is a good one! :D

Bore Butter has mineral oil in it which is pretty cheap by itself and maybe something worth trying. It's sold as an intestinal lubricant at drug stores which we used to give to our dog to prevent digestive tract obstructions. It's also used to lubricate electric hair clipper blades.
Mineral oil is similar to Ballistol minus a few "miracle" ingredients, isn't it?

Several effective bp solvents/cleaners/lubricants contain mineral oil; Ballistol and Butch's Bore Shine come immediately to mind, but there are several others.

Vaseline is the trade mark name of Unilever's formulation of white petroleum jelly; mineral oil is not known to be an ingredient in that product.

Almost any in Illinois

Funny thing you should ask about illegal opinions. There was an online ethics course being offered for continuing legal education credit in Illinois.

It got cancelled. :fire:

Only one attorney in Illinois signed up for it, me! :what:

Back to the issue at hand. If Pam is flammable (and I suspect it is only the propellent in it) would that not help the combustion of the powder? Well, answering that question is, I doubt it, since Pam is made not to burn and cause foods to stick to pots and pans, glass and ceramic.

However, if you have been to the store lately, you will find Pam for baking with flour, Pam with Olive Oil (for shooting Beretta's, Uberti's, Pedersoli's and Pietta's?), Pam for the grill (really hot shooting - three Pyrodex pellets?) and probably some Pam's I didn't mention.

Choices, choices, choices! :D

I don't think its a good idea

If it is going to be washed off and reapplied every time you shoot, it might be ok, but for regular arms I think its a bad idea.

However, the stuff is AWESOME for sealing leather shoes/boots. It might work on tents in light rain, if applied before rain.

I've heard horror stories about people using WD-40 though. That stuff strips grease and oil, it is worthless except as a rust remover or for getting storage grease off stuff. don't put it in your barrel.

Dang I'm broke Lube Pills

"Soybean oil, soy lecithin, water and propellant."

Now what the lubricant I said I use in my Lube Pills?

Dang I'm broke Lube Pills

What I did was start out with:
Parafin comes in a brick divided to to 4 like a stick a butter, I used a stick.
Then 1/4 of a Bolwax Toilet Seal Ring(Beeswax)substitute or beeswax or use with the parafin.
*.*Then 8-10 Tablespoons of Olive Oil/soy oil *.*
The Olive oil is the Lube the Waxes just carry it and keep the pill as
you want it.(consistacey/hard or soft...climate time of year)
And that made alot about 600 pills...about 1/8" thick for the most part.
Place the lube mixture in a small saucepan, place the small saucepan in a larger pan with water
boilin' the water and sorta poach the lube mix to a liquid.
level stiff heated pizza pan(or 7-9" heavy pie pan)is the best thing to pour your mix into...
so mix cools evenly(flat) .Place in fridge when it's set stiff(optional)
And worked good for me...you need to try your best guess and add/subract as you like them
for your use.

Punch out to the caliber of your choice, with a tube. Place lube pill over powder with ball
on top. You'll shoot all day without binding. Keeps cylinder lubed fouling soft and barrel
relatively clean.

It works.

I tried to use Pam once, but she said no.

Been There , Done That. I feel your pain. God, she was cute as a button.;)

I've been using Ballistol and SG's grease cookies. I like it better than any petroleum base oils I used in the past. I'm slowly converting my center fire arms to ballistol.
