I had posted this in legal, it is not a legal topic so it was closed, reposting it here.

It took 4 years to sentence this SOB. Yet in only took a few months for the Legislature to cram the
"Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act” down out throats

Most were expecting the death sentence but didn't happen. Guess it doesn't matter as he would sit on death row forever. Either way we pay for it.

They want gun control, well maybe there should be swift punishment.??

All the fallout from this and the millions spent. Now there is a probe for jurors being threatened.

This hits close to home for personal reasons

It is a total mess. There are conflicting points of view for all aspects of the sentencing. One can get into a philosophical and practical discussion of the death penalty. One can view it from a fast, emotional evaluation or a slower, more reasoned, cognitive point of view. I could speak to both.

Swift punishment - well , there are enough cases of innocents on death row (not that this is one of those) to argue against that. What is the purpose of the death penalty? The issue of causality - did he have neurological and developmental issues such that there was some diminished capacity and he was a victim in childhood. How to parse that? I know as case of a pretty awful rapist. Then you find out that as a child, he was sodomized repeatedly and his mother used to give him Tabasco sauce enemas when he misbehaved.

Deterrence (not real evidence for that - just a quick point - look at the shooters who killed themselves - they weren't deterred). Vengeance - is that morally acceptable - cue thousands of pages on that. Closure for the relatives - does that work? Debatable.

Prevention of recidivism if he gets out - life without parole?

There's no straight answer. Easy to emote or pontificate. That the jury is in conflict is the real mess right now.

That sweet little boy likely won't survive long in one of our so called correctional institutions..................odds are the preferred option will play out in due time.

Life in Prison can be worst than death! hope he gets a bit of Bubba & Tyron for a few decades

It was closed because the topic of sentencing and the numerous flaws in the justice system are simply off topic for THR. Yes, the resulting gun control legislation impacts us, but that is not the main topic here. This thread is about the sentence the shooter received. Which is off topic.
