A friend I did some work for who used to shoot in IPSC With my dad tried to give me a 10mm he had. Personally I'm a .45 kind of guy so I wasn't interested. The funny thing is he's been shooting a .38 super competitively for years and decided he wanted to shoot somthing different. He said he got tired of getting smoked by guys he used to beat on a regular basis with his super so he tried to give it to me. I settled on a S&W 617 ss w/6" barrel with the full lug. It matches my 625 686 and last but not least my 629. I think I came out ahead anyway. I didn't want to reload 10mm when I'm already reloading so darn many things to begin with. And if I ever decide I want a 10mm Ill go buy a .40!

Get a psychologist on the phone STAT! You clearly are not sane! Are you allowed to own firearms if you are not mentally sane? j/k. I would add 10mm to my list of calibers before any .40 s&w. Most anyone here would take a free gun even if it were a Hi-Point pistol.

BTW, out of curiousty, have you ever shot a 10mm? I sure hope so or I can add you to the list of those that bash it because they haven't tried it.

"And if I ever decide I want a 10mm Ill go buy a .40!"

:scrutiny:

That only means you don't understand what a 10mm is.

i would have went for the 10mm myself or the 38 super and 40 Short and weak over the 10mm as above poster stated i dont think you understand the 10mm

Gentlmen I understand the 10mm perfectly well. Since i had no plan of reloading another caliber buying ammo would have sucked. Nobody around this area sells it hardly because outside of my friend they aren't very popular. And buy the way at what point did sound like i was bashing. Yes i have shot a 10mm before. The only thing that separates the 10 and the 40 is about 1/8 to 1/7th of a inch. The 40 is more popular in a shorter period of time than the 10 because its a better competition round. The 10mm is one of several odd ball calibers including the .40 as far as im concerned. 9mm and .45 more than fill my needs. I also got a sweet SS S&W 617 out of the deal so i did pretty well as for as im concerned!! You act like i said the 10 was a abomination. Not a bad gun just not my kind of gun!!!

There is a 10mm hollowpoint load that puts a 200 grain bullet out at 1200 fps. I'd say the difference between the .40 S&W and the 10mm is more than 1/8". For competition maybe you load them the same.
I notice you have a .44 Magnum instead of a .44 Special. In the sense that you can load them to the same velocities at the same weight bullets they are the same animal.
But do whatever fits your needs.

I have never understood any reloader who considers tooling up for another caliber to be an effort. You invest in a set of dies, a shellholder or shellplate, and a supply of brass then you are basically set for life all for the price of a few boxes of factory ammo. Bullets of course are bought as needed unless you cast then you also invest in a mold and sizing die.

I'll take any firearm if someone wants to give it to me for free.

Did any of you guys miss the part about the 600$ .22 I got for free instead of the 10mm.

To quote Beavis and Butthead "Oh...huh huh....oh yeah I caught that!"

Congrats on a free S&W 617. Getting what you want is the most important thing (you sound like a revo kinda guy?). BTW what kind of 10mm was it? Sometimes you can fit a .40S&W barrel to the gun so you have both a 10mm and .40S&W flexibility (I have a colt delta elite with a colt 10mm and .40 barrel). :)

Ajax,

10mms are by far my favorite, but there's definately nothing wrong with a nice, S&W .22 revolver. I've got an old Model 17 and and it has a trigger that breaks like the proverbial "glass rod."

I don't think you mentioned what make and model the 10mm was. If it was something relatively rare it may have been worth more than the .22, but as long as your happy with the Smith I guess it really doesn't matter.

Do you already reload for the .40 S&W? If so then don't forget the dies will also work for the 10mm. With a Glock, 1911, or EAA Witness in 10mm you can also get a .40 barrel and shoot both calibers.

Congrats on picking up a SWEET .22. I won my first competition with one just like it. You don't hear about free guns anymore so squawk all you want. Anybody that spears you is just jealous, myself included.:neener:

I thougt it was pretty cool myself. I would like to reiterate that Im not bashing the 10mm its just not the gun for me. I beleive if your reloading that it is a fine pistol but I already reload almost 10 different calibers. Its highly likely that I spend more time reloading than shooting. I don't reload .40 but I dont own a .40 either. Model was a 1026 S&W.

I can understand turning down a free gun for various reasons.
A best friend wanted to give me his new Glock 17 after he bought it and didn't like it.

I don't like Glocks, won't have one.

It's on my short list of guns I wouldn't own if they were given to me.:)
