Patron Saint of Handgunners: Anyone ever heard of this?

Yes. The story is a bit on the vague side and the particular Order in question is not too enthused about him becoming a patron saint of handgunners.

Personally as a Catholic I have no problem with it at all. St. Michael is the patron saint of policemen and I think soldiers as well, so there is plenty of precedent for "rough men" taking any help they can get.

Not sure of Jeff Cooper's religious preferences; otherwise he could be a runner-up in say twenty years...

Actually St Michael is the patron staint of paratroopers. Among others.
