Pawn shop aficionados: Look and be amazed!

I saw a .32 Llama in a pawn shop on south Nevada in Co Springs They wanted 189.00$ ( this was 10 years ago) I pointed out that Llamas were going for that new, they told me to go buy a new one.

They then told me that this particular gun had never been fired, whereupon I field stripped said firearm and showed them a barrel that was blacker than a coal miners butt.

They then asked me to leave.

I've found good deals in pawn shops but I find more pawn brokers that think 500.00 $ for a Jimenez is a fair price.

I think the best deal I have ever found at a pawn shop was an original Inland M1 Carbine, no lug, flip site, push button safety, non import, 5 mags(2 loaded), 2 mag pouches, and sling for $275.00. It is the most perfect M1 I have ever seen...doesn't even look fired. There was a half inch stack of dust/lint that had gone down the barrel and stacked up on the bolt. Not a spec of rust anywhere. This was back when imports were selling for $199.00 at most places. Seemed like a big premium to pay at the time, but sure seems cheap now!

I've got an acquaintance who runs a pawnshop- what comes out of pawn and gets put on the floor (in his shop) are usually small power tools that turn quickly, small tv's and home electronics, and the like. Most anything larger or of better quality goes immediately to Ebay or Gun Broker. The few handguns he keeps are things like old Charters, Rossi or occasionally a Smith that should turn quickly, but might not be in the very best of shape. I know he's had two Swedish Mausers that are so-so with firm tag prices around $550.

All told, most of the shop's non-interest income is from EBay and other auctions.

Regards,
Rabbit.

I've gotten quite a few good buys from pawn shops.

Like new 870 Wingmaster 20 gauge $230ish OTD

Finnish M39 Nagant in really good shape $91.86 OTD

Ruger M77MKII Stainless Varmint/Target model in .308 with Harris Bipod and $50 leather sling for $550ish OTD

Polytech M14/S with a leather M1907 shooting sling(new) for $648 OTD

Mossberg 500 for $90 OTD

Brand new Marlin 1894CP in .357 magnum(no longer made, ported 16.25" barrel) for $440ish OTD.

Albanian SKS $130ish OTD

My cousin recently got a Colt Delta Elite for $650(might have been $750, can't remember now) OTD I should have bought it and turned it for a nice profit, but I have no interest in anything with Colt stamped on it.

I've seen several Winchester 94's go in the $150 range, and lots of other good to decent deals.

Might I suggest trying some different shops?

If you don't like pawn shops, then don't shop there. As far as deals and bargains, they are a vendor just like other dealers and will have good prices on some items and not others.

Rabbit does touch on a serious point and a buddy of mine who buys militaria has noticed it as well. The internet has changed the face business. Pawnbrokers need to no longer be at a loss for what an item cost originally or what it is worth. They can compare their products to what is being sold online and set prices that are firm because they "know" what they can get for the product. Many now deal on a national and even international level to sell their goods too.

There are some great shops in my area, one I have usually used as an FFL. I check them all, and it became something of an amusement to run by Gold Nugget just to see how outrageous the price on what ever their new gun was.

I don't even know of a pawn shop in our area that sells guns anymore. There was one but I think they got out of the gun side of the business. Said something about the ATF forcing them out. They were selling off everything at the time and had two T-44 Mosin's "on sale" for only $189.00 each. They both looked like they had been used for fence posts. I could have a package deal. $139.00 each. It was hard but I had to pass them up. (Gander Mountain down the street had some that looked like they were brand new for $99.00.)

I got one deal at a pawnshop. Smith model 19 snubby, unfired, $250. I had trouble keep my poker face on.
They had a glock 17 for $685, so I knew they must have mispriced the Smith.

Sounds like the pawn shops around here.

I went to one and they had a Ruger Charger (already have one) and I just asked to see what they wanted for it. $356!!! WOW. I bought mine new for $307 and theirs didn't come with a bag, bipod, or a mag and the grip was almost completly broken off. I passed. LOL.

Sig 230SL, excellent condition, $275.
Beretta Storm 9mm, very little use, $550.

Both purchases avoided shipping charges and the dealer ran the paperwork for free.

Luck is where you search for it.

ASH,

You should check out Terry's Pawn and Trade in Sumrall, Ms. Terry is a good guy and he has decent prices on most of his used firearms. he is usually lower on price on new firearms than alot of places.

I frequent a local pawn shop quiet a bit. They have deals and they have high priced junk. You just have to do your homework before buying. I have got a few very good deals:

Inland M1 Carbine $329 OTD
S'G' M1 Carbine $339 OTD
S&W M-36 Snubby LNIB $299 OTD
Colt Det. Spec. Nickel VG Cond. $349 OTD
S&W 686-3 LNIB $399 OTD
Several Norinco SKS in good cond. for $150 each OTD
Pre-64 30/30 Winchester Lever Gun in Very Good cond. $210 OTD

They are usually within market price range on most items but a few are just way out there for no reason. Those usually end up sitting on the shelf for months and months. If I like the gun and they won't budge on the price, I try and wait them out. After 6 months or more I ask to see it and strike up a conversation about it being here for a while. Sometimes they will come back with make us an offer and they take it, sometimes it goes back to sit longer.

Here are a few of the gems I have found in Pawn Shops around Jacksonville NC over the years.

FNC .223 like new $400.00 but missing a mag (uses m16 mags).

Hakim 7.62x39 $175.00

Two Soviet SVD 40's for $300.00

Norinco .45 $180

Daewoo K1 $150 (missing buttstock)

I picked up a stainless sig p229 in 9mm for $445 from a pawn shop. It was in very good general condition but it had definaltely been fired quite a bit, but it worked great. Come to think of it, I should probably drop in on that pawn shop and see what they have these days.

Tell ya what - Why don't I just drive up to your house, and take a buncha pictures of the front, and post them on the internet, telling folks that I think that it looks stupid?

Whoa there buddy. Take a breath. I didn't say what shop it was. There are dozens of pawn shops in downtown Phoenix. There are probably more than a hundred in metropolitan Phoenix.

I've been to plenty of pawn shops around here. Seen decent deals and not-so-decent deals. But this shop (which I had not been to before) was so far over the top that I couldn't help but be amazed.

So chill.

I picked up a NIB saiga 12 a couple months ago for $435 at a pawn shop. I would say that was a good deal. The place I got it has good deals but this place is likely the exception.

Not a bad deal at all. I wonder how many people would be paying $500+ if they knew dealer cost was only $363(at least it was a few months ago)?

Hakim 7.62x39 $175.00
The Hakim was 8mm - never seen one in 7.62x39. It sounds like you may have gotten it's little brother, the Rasheed. Which is quite a score, only about 8000 were imported and the prices keep rising.

I am a Soldier and was in uniform and showed up at a pawn store near Fort Campbell, KY (on the TN side). I browsed the rifles. Found a beautiful SS Ruger 10/22 with scope in near new condition for $150. I pulled out the plastic. They wouldn't sell it to me because I had an out of state DL - despite the fact that I had PCS orders which will allow them to sell to me. :banghead::barf::fire:

Who exactly is this law protecting again....? Heaven forbid a US Army Soldier gets his hands on a Ruger 10/22...

I've seen some nice deals around my pawn shops. I guess the pawn shops near me arent filled with idiots. I saw a 500 persuader for 180 bucks once. Wish i got it. I also saw a 9mm Springfield XD plus two mags for 375 with almost no wear on it. If I was 21 I would have bought it in a heartbeat.
