So, let's say somebody needed to go from PA to Indiana but passed through Ohio with a total of 6 guns, unloaded and in cases. For sake of argument, the vehicle is an open bedded pickup with backseat and only the driver as occupant, thus guns in cases would be in the back with seat folded up. 2 pistols, an AR and an M1 carbine, bolt action rifle and a shotgun. Is this peaceable journey or a criminal offense?

I think I'd stay in the Poconos :D.... Should be good "fall colors" weather there about now. (Saw some between here and Columbus last week.)

Handguns should be in some kind of case, empty, and stored in the trunk or anywhere else in the vehicle where it's hard for the driver to get to them. Behind a pickup truck's passenger side seatback is good. Crew-cab, I'd put 'em behind the rear seats if possible. Magazines need not be empty, but are probably best stored as far away from the gun as possible.

The same general rules apply to long guns, although you can put 'em in gun racks in the back window, etc., with their actions open. I'm not sure I'd do that :D....

The spirit of the law is to require that you make several overt moves to put the gun into service, long enough for an Officer to react. Our safety is not recognized.

You may want to hit the Ohio Attorney General's web page for more.

OH is a "must notify" state if you're licensed, carrying, and your license is recognized by OH. Notification must be "promptly", with that undefined. "Carrying" means that you're actually wearing the gun, or it's loaded and in the vehicle someplace.

I think I covered it all.... If not, somebody will jump on me :D....

If you're going to stay someplace in OH, though, you should probably bring more guns.... :D

It's generally OK to bring that arsenal into a hotel room, btw. You can't "carry" 'em, but they can be in their various boxes.

Your back seat is part of the passenger compartment. By my non-lawyer reckoning you are not compliant unless those cases are locked. Ammo boxes too.

It's what I do, mostly with TSA combination locks on the zipper pulls.

I was told in our CCW class that under Ohio law, a magazine is considered part of the weapon; thus a loaded magazine is a loaded weapon. A clip (e.g. an enbloc for my garand) is not considered part of the weapon.

Sinbad:

The "loaded magazines make the gun loaded" rule went away a while back. September 2011, I think....

Somewhere along the line having a loaded magazine in the vehicle made any firearm in the vehicle "loaded" regardless. (They did sort out the "en bloc" thing at least.) Eventually the legislature changed that. The magazines still should be separate from the gun if you're not licensed, but that's all.

OH allows Open Carry without licenses. However, having to empty magazines in order to store the gun in your vehicle (and to re-load the magazines when you get out of it) finally sunk in as being slightly nuts, and probably unconstitutional, too.

Many pickups have a storage area behind the front seats - that should be sufficient for a "trunk", but locked cases still may be a tad safer.

I don't get to take "peaceable journeys" anymore.... Between my wife and daughter.... :D

(The kid's trying to kill me. Her new apartment is on the third floor, and if you want to use the bathroom, its up another flight of stairs. Guess who's not going to visit her apartment again. :D)

Hope the OP has a good trip.
