Just bought a cva cascade and want to put a picatinny rear peep sight (no gunsmithing needed) with a ramp front sight (gunsmith needed). My question is, what height should the front sight be to work best with my rear sight?

I'm SURE this is a dumb question, but I want the sight line from the rear sight to the front sight to be a level straight line, correct? I wasn't 100% sure if there was some offset angle to calculate when aligning them. Needless to say, I'm no gunsmith 🥸. Thanks.

I think Marble’s has a formula , but I am not smart enough to figure it out .

It depends. In theory the sight plane would need to point down slightly so that the arc of the bullet and the line of sight will meet at your zero distance. This doesn't quite work out that way though because the rifle recoils while the bullet is still in the barrel, so the barrel tips up slightly before the bullet leaves the muzzle. If you look at a magnum revolver for example, the sights actually point up quite a bit.

So it depends on how heavy recoiling of a caliber and how long the bullet stays in the bore. A 45/70 will need a taller front sight than a 223. I would suggest getting a front sight base that can take dovetailed front sight inserts from Williams, so you can experiment and change the front sight height as needed.
