Being a cheap skate, I went for the cheapest safe that would keep my 3 handguns from kids/grandkids.

I found a Sentry Model 1100 fire safe for $19.00! It holds all 3 guns, clips and holsters.

Thought I would pass that on as I have seen many pistol safes in the $100.00 range.

Looks like a great buy! After a quick search on google, they seem like they're quality safes. I might have to pick one up. Would you recommend it for a home defense piece?

We have several of these at work in various departments. I store the keys to ours inside the safe so we won't lose them. It is much quicker to open it with a screwdriver than it is to use the keys anyway. They are also portable, so theft is a problem. They are good for fire protection only and maybe keeping out LITTLE kids. It takes less than 2 seconds to open one with a screwdriver.

Ah, I never tried a screw driver. I will keep that in mind if I lose the keys.

For just keeping kids out, it should be fine. Even older kids should be fine...most "just curious" kids will not actually break into something because they know that they'll be caught when you notice the damage. Combine that with your classic "layered" defense (not advertising where it is and what is inside, and/or showing the kids gun safety, thus removing the 'forbidden fruit' attraction) and you should be OK against "good" kids.

This won't stop a determined thief or a bad kid, but that's not really it's purpose.

As to keeping home defense weapons there, it is a question of need vs. safety. I lock up my shotgun when I have houseguests who might nose into trouble and not have sense (pretty rare), and when I'm away. I have it unlocked and readily accessible when we're home alone, and especially when I'm in bed.

Very well stated. I was thinking the same thing about kids. Mine do not know where the safe is, I constantly tell them about gun safety. I never thought about it but I do use a multilayered approach.

I also keep a gun accessable and not locked up at night and other times when I deem it necessary.

I guess great minds think alike ;)
