Considering the urban-rural divide, I was just wondering to myself about personal responsibility and the use of hand held devices. Some people have great concern about deaths caused by firearms (around 30k per year). Many are unconcerned about deaths caused by cell phones (considerably north of 30k per year).

My question becomes one of demographics. Is there a significant difference in the rate of death by hand held devices between urban and rural populations? Is there any evidence that personal responsibility is a thing that manifests itself in different behaviors between urban and rural populations? Are urban dwellers more likely to be killed by hand held devices than rural residents?

People don't get killed by guns or handheld devices. They get killed by murderers and careless, irresponsible, self centered idiots that live through their phones. Population density and traffic in urban areas increases the odds of encountering both.

You know, you’re right. I thought I had a number, but after some research, the number is different than I thought. According to NHSTA, over a million auto accidents resulting in over 300k injuries and 3000+ deaths per year are due to distracted driving due to cell phone use. I stand corrected.

This will probably be frowned upon but be careful with any info from the NHTSA. Years ago, I knew someone who worked for them and they determined a lot of their stats from funky math/info. Example, if a person is doing 15 over on a street and gets in an accident cause they were hit by someone who ran a stop sign or red light it could be related to speeding cause the person would not have been at that intersection at the time the other vehicle ran the signal; thus the accident would not have happened.

Since this was before cell phone usage like today I would not doubt if they linked a lot of accidents to cell phone usage even if it was not the actual cause (distraction). Not sure, but again it is a government agency.

13 teens killed each day text messaging. Not to mention how many they kill doing it. On any given day you can just watch some SOB going through a red light siimply because his facebook page or twitter page need a reply. Read a article about how many School Buses are rear ended each year from someone text messaging. Imagine, some sick jerk cannot even seen a huge yellow bus, with red flashing lights going on like crazy. Happens all the time. And cops never enforce this. Yes, you will see 20 or more cops at a DUI check, while in the Meantime, 500 jerks texting all around them.
