I recently purchased a NIB PF-9 on 6-5-10 from a Firearm dealer in Jacksonville, Fl. Like any new gun purchase, I immediately gave it a thorough inspection and cleaning when I got home. Needless to say, after going to the range both yesterday and today I became oh so very disappointed with the results.

In as short of a summary as possible…………………

I ran 100 rds of WWB FMJ and 50 rds of Reminton UMC 115gr JHP through it yesterday and the gun would repeatedly fail to extract. Clearly disheartened with the situation, I took it home & cleaned it again.

When cleaning it, I paid especial attention to the extractor for damage and fouling and the chamber for burrs or noticeable problems. There was no damage or noticeable problems to either, to my eye at least. I then lubed it as instructed on KTOG, assembled the pistol back together and hoped for something different the following day at the range.

Well today came and nothing was different. :( I shot 100 rounds of Federal 115gr FMJ and 50 rounds of WWB 147gr JHP with the exact same problem as the day before........Numerous failures to extract.

Here are some pictures I took of exactly what is happening when I say "Fail to Extract";

This is the current condition and shape of the extractor;

What should my next step be?
1. Return it to dealer immediately at a 20% restocking fee and store credit before my headaches quickly turn into Migraines with this gun?
2. Deal with the migraine and return it to Kel-tec for warranty service?
3. Sit back, relax and trust that by post #5-#10 on this thread one of yall will promptly tell me exactly what the problem is and clearly how to fix it?

Appreciate all the help and info guys!

It depends how much you like it.

If it worked, would you keep it?

If so, return it for factory warranty.

Send it back to keltec, and probably end up with an extra magazine for your troubles....Mine logged 6 trips in as many months. Its gone 2000 rounds flawlessly since the last trip. I also have 8 mags for it now. All the issues I experienced were pretty bad in terms of reliability but basically the gun needed a fluff and buff and a replacement frame.

Personally, I would return it to the dealer and pass on the headache. Then again, I'm not all that familiar with Kel Tec products. I've heard good and bad. Good luck either way.

I'd try to fix it myself. If the brass isn't coming out of the chamber, I'd suspect extractor or extractor spring.

I'd talk with someone at Kel Tec to see what they think, and if they would send me these parts at a reasonable cost or for free.

If no, then I'd bring it back to the dealer. I'd rather lose 20% off a cheap gun than to send it away for several weeks and pay for postage.

Same problem with both mags? If yes then I would round up another mag to create a baseline. Dealer of origin should trade you on a short term basis. If you still have FTE then I would see if the ejector spring screw is tight. It's not all that long and held in there with Lock-Tite. Next, for less than the cost to ship it to Kel-Tec ($5.00) you can order a new ejector and spring and fix it yourself. If it is in fact an ejector issue. My money is on the mags. Outsourced stamped steel is always suspect in my mind.

Kel-tec is buried. It will take 6-8 weeks to get it back from them and you're not likely to get a thing for your troubles. I sure didn't.

I'd keep it. Good carry piece for the money once you get them running right.

...

Looking at your "excellent photo's" my question is, can you hand pull that partial non-extracted spent casing out easily.. ? If you push it almost all the way back in, do you feel it get tight ?

Same test with a full/live (being careful) round, does it go in all the way or do you feel resistance.. and at a point, so you can pull it out, is it tight, semi hard to pull out by your fingers..?

If you get either really stuck, just use a pencil, rubber end or cut off front wood end and tap it out.. very easy, nor harm no foul to interior barrel using wood.. only

My thinking is, possibly, chamber may need a tad of honing.. or you could try some Flitz gun polish in there.. and then try again, live shooting.

While your at it, use the Flitz Polish on the feed ramp (then when you polish both areas "dry" run your live ammo test again..

IF same problem, then, depending if you really want to keep gun, send it back stating chamber tight (if you feel it is) along with pics and extractor - questionable.

They'll get it to work if you do a little home work for them in a typed, polite, "need your help" letter to Atten: Gunny

Luck,

Ls

Ps.. Or you can buy a great product called EEZOX, and clean those same areas and let it sit overnight, then run dry gun pad over area to get any extra out, as it will bond to any metal "pours" making any metal to metal contact slippery and prevent any rust as a bonus..

And believe it, me, when I tell you less is more, as this stuff goes a loooooong ways.. No need for overkill, not even close and also great for cleaning interior/exterior mag walls spring, follower, and won't harm plastic.. if any

I think that IF you are using a solid grip on the pistol then you've got potential warranty issues. The PF-9 has a heck of a kick and limp wristing is easy to do with this model.

Next, for less than the cost to ship it to Kel-Tec ($5.00) you can order a new ejector and spring and fix it yourself.

If he calls them, they'll most likely just send the parts no charge.

My thinking is, possibly, chamber may need a tad of honing..

My thoughts as well, if there's not an extractor issue. Easy to fix with a dremel and a polishing kit. Or, you could ask KT to send a new barrel, too. But that's a more substantial part; they may want to see the gun at their factory to make that determination. Worth asking, though.

It's a fundamentally good gun, but they're churning them out at such a fast pace that a few things are slipping past CS. Mine has been an excellent piece.

Their CS is top notch, they're willing to do pretty much anything to keep their customers happy.

I don't see where limp-wristing could have anything to do with this problem. If he was limp-wristing the gun, you'd still expect the empty to extract, even if it ended up stovepiping. A gun that fails to extract when you limpwrist would be a disaster. If this happened to a GLOCK when it was limp-wristed, the company would be ruined.

I also highly doubt this could be related to the magazine!? Why, for the love of guns? The slide is still holding the next round down by the time this empty fails to extract!

Check the chamber, like was mentioned. Then put in some dummy rounds and eject them in slow motion. See if the claw can hold a round firmly against the breech. Wiggle it around to see if the extractor tension is tight. This is a locked breech gun. The extractor needs to have a very good grip on the rim. Everything could be perfect, except the spring is too weak. That's hard to see.

I don't know if you already posted it, but take notice of where/how far the empties fly, when they successfully eject, next time at the range.

Some good advice there. I live in Jax too. Was the store Shooters? If so ask for Mike (owner's son) and see if they won't swap it or if their smith won't check it out for ya. I have never heard of a restock fee from them, they are generally very good. Please tell me you did not buy from Gander, Green Acres or some other over-priced joint... :(

didnt even think about that. It was weird because it took me a while to find the brass when I was done shooting. I was shooting with my truck tailgate about 5ft behind me and the brass was landing a few ft away from the driverside tire/bumper.

Soooooo.......When successfully extracted and ejected, the brass would end up like 10-15ft behind me to the right.

The store was Top Gun & Sporting Goods. I bought it from them at the gun show hosted at the Morocco Shrine Center earlier this month.

The receipt says;
20% RESTOCKING FEE ON ALL PURCHASES DUE TO FDLE TD
NO CASH REFUNDS ON FIREARMS
STORE CREDIT ONLY

It's a KEL TEC
there is no headache

Seriously, it's just a matter of shipping, KT customer service is the best, from my experience, even though my gun was bought used, the had the parts to me as fast as the post office could deliver them.

Second, check out KTOG.Org, and look up fluff and buff
you may need to remove milling marks from the chamber

However, if you send it in, expect it to be smooth as butter when it comes back, many people have rave reviews of how their pistol operated after the factory serviced them. Some not, too, just make sure of your grip, because KT are also notorious victims of limp wristing.

step 1 - CALL KEL TEC
step 2 - do what they say to do, probebly they can walk you through the troubleshooting and isolate the problem
step 3 - install the parts KT sends you for free, or send it to them for repair if it is beyond your capabilities (it probably isn't)

Kel Tec makes great gun hobby kits, after some tweaking they become great carry guns, and they're an awesome value for the price. Dumping it back on the dealer would just be silly, for that price point you're going to get the occasional part needing a tweak or even have something slip through QA once in a while ... luckily KT has GREAT warranty service by all accounts, the only company I've heard more praise about is Henry (and let's face it, Henry ain't making little bitty defensive pistols).

you got the answer in post #3 I'd run as fast as I could from this brand.

Maybe their customer service is soo good because QC and finish machining isn't.

Seriously you guys think this is a good company? A good product? I doubt JMB or Sam Colt would sell a gun that needs a "fluff and buff" to function.

What’s next, ship a gun in the white and let the buyer finish it off?

It's true that they have great customer service. I just hate shelling out 3 bills for a firearm only to send it back to the factory for 2 months.

As for the limp wrist comments, when I shoot left handed tactical drills I'm often guilty of limp wristing my PF-9 (same for my Glocks and 1911's) and they never FTE or stovepipe.

You're asking for opinions and you'll get everything from you 3 options to the kitchen sink:) Here is my humble but accurate opinion:D

I'll take door #1...
1. Return it to dealer immediately at a 20% restocking fee and store credit before my headaches quickly turn into Migraines with this gun?

Because I don't want a Kal, but that's just me.

huntsman You must not have shot any basic 1911's as they could stove pipe at any give time and would not feed HP's not with out a (fluff and buff of there own). I have a pf=9 and like many others i can not make it screw up, even holding it loose with just 2 fingers and fireing it. If you think s&w, ruger or any other company don't sell guns that need to go back you are wrong, specialy in the last year . When this gun was cleaned some ing might have happed,, time will tell. I have shot better than 800 rounds including 200 of my carry ammo with NO trouble.
cleetus03 Call kel tec talk to them and if needed they will make right quickly.

Yeah I never did get the 1911 loyalty either.

To me a gun should function right out of the box, now I can understand a few slipping by QC and needing sent back just as I can understand that mechanical things break so they need repaired.

But this product seems to be shipped 3/4 done and there's a SOP widely known by customers that needs done to a new gun.

FWIW my son owns one and he brought it over, fired a 100 rounds through it without a glitch.

I new it was a cheap gun but until this thread I guess I didn’t know how cheap.
