Bought a new scope(well new to me)tonight,Leupold Vari-X III Tactical 8.5-25 x 50. Any one any experience of them?

Anyway I am going to get a Remington Police or Ltr .308 to attach it too and wondered if there is any real advantage of me getting a picatinny rail or will plain old normal mounts and bases do? What is the main advantage of a picatinny rail, strength? And will i need a 20MOA rail to reach to 800 or possibly even a 1000 yards? The scope has a 30mm tube.

Any comments appreciated.

Thanks USSR, is the one piece just stronger than the two? Is it still quite easy to load the remington with the one piece base? It has a floorplate not a DM.

Get a one piece. It's much more likely your rings will be properly aligned when mounted on a 1 piece base.
