I'm not sure if this should be posted here or in the Gunsmithing area, but I think this gets more traffic so here it goes:

I thinking about replacing the standard base on my BuckMark with a Picatinny rail. I'd like to have the option to use the sights or a reflex sight.

I've been looking at Williams Fire Sights as a replacement for the original ones, so I was wondering about the following.

Tactical Solutions makes a Picatinny rail with built-in rear sight, as well as a plain one. Since I want to use the Williams sights, I would end up replacing the integrated sighs, which is a waste of about $50 (the price difference between the plain and the sight rail).

So, the Question:
Can the plain rail be modified to install the Williams Firesights on it? Has any one done this ?

The cost of the rail with integrated sights is about $75, which is about the same as the cost for the plain rail and the FireSights , and I get a front fiberoptic sight in the bargain.

Done !

Well, seeing how I didn't get any help here, I decided to go for it anyway. Instead of the Tactical Solutions rail, I bought the SunOptics rail from Natchez Shooting Supplies. Their price for this rail was $12, half the cost of the Tactical Solutions rail. They also had a good price on Williams FireSights, $38.

Anyway, with a little bit of Dremel work, a small drill, a file and some flat black paint, I was able to integrate the FireSights on this rail, so now I can have both the Micro Reflex and the open sights.

As a note for those interested in the SunOptics, it's pretty well built, but the back of the rail rubs against the slide when fully tightened down. However all it needs is a very thin shim/washer between it, and the rear screw post, to provide the necessary clearance.
