Picked up a S&W 586 today

Hi everyone just have a question regarding a the going rate for S&W 586. I picked it up from a friend toay that is going through a devoce and needed some cash. He bought it new and said its only had 12 rounds put hrough it, Spent most of its life in a display cabinet. 6 " barrel, bore clean and sharp, 6 shot, adjustable rear sight, model 586 (no dashs, and no "m" stamp), .357, factory wood grips, tight lock up, and in the orginal box. To bad but the owners manual was missing. there are very very faint turn marks on the cyl, Other than that I can not find a single mark or blemish on this gun. I picked it up for $300. What is going rate for private sale of a gun like his? Thaks for an information

That's a fair price. Since Smith dropped some of their prices they kind of put the screws to getting more money out of the older Revolvers.

That's an excellent deal! I just bought a 4" version in great condition on Gunbroker for $475, and thought I did pretty well...

I didn't think the finger prints would show up so much ib the picture, but this what I picked up. Can't wait to go try it out. Thanks for the offer circuit, but I think I will hang on to it for right now

The early L-frames had a recall that involved, among other things, replacing what S&W calls the "Hammer nose." You may want to call them and see if yours has had that done.

THank for the heads up David, As far as I know the mod was not done, It would have had a "M" stacked next to the model number. The original owner bought it new in 89 from a local gun shopAt some point I will send it in for the mod. Sounds like it can get locked up from primer soot when using cheap ammo. I could be wrong though. But I will keep that in though.

Hello friends and neighbors // Congrats my 1983 6" 586 is my favorite handgun. Sounds like it worked out great for both of you.

IMHO the price is low but in this economy I've gotten $200.00 off of marked price several times.

Since it is a friend going thru a hard time and not a pawn shop (no disrespect to pawn shops I love um) you might buy him a tank of gas or dinner.

If you really want to know current winning bids and actual prices go to Gun Broker or another such site and check for an As New S&W 586 with the box. Then add in the FFL transfer fee and shipping, the price you paid was very good.

I recently got a 1976 S&W model 28 for $350 with box and papers in a similar situation Glad it worked out great for both of you.

Beautiful gun....If you want to really make the blue shine and cut down on the fingerprints, wax it with Johnson's paste wax...The same stuff you would put on wood floors. You can get a can at Lowes.

That is an amazing deal. 586's, like the one you bought, are fetching almost double what you paid. I think they are one of S&W's best looking revolvers. And of course, they are top of the line in just about every way. Nice job!

Great price and I have not had a chance to pick up a no dash for those prices in like 5 years. good deal.
If you shoot it and the cylinder siezes up you can still send it back for the warrenty work as they are still doing the mods on them for free from what I remember.

Thanks, I had just happoned to come across this one when chatting with a friend about a .357 Blackhawk I was looking at from KTP. Now I just need to wait till its above zero degrees outside so I can try it out!

I bought mine in 1995, with a 4" barrel. It was a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit - changing to .40 S&W) gun, with S&W and BART logos, in "mint" condition. It cost me $325 then. You got a great deal.
