I've owned a bunch of custom 1911s, still have several and they're all great guns, but they had all been built for someone else. Something I had never done was commission a custom 1911 build for myself. Last year I decided it was time. I had this full size ORM 1991A1 .38 Super that I'd picked up a few years ago and had an idea to have it built into an all around, do everything gun, something I could use for competition, self defense, hunting, whatever I felt like. I took it to my friends at Dietrich Gunsmithy in Otis, ME. Robin, the gunsmith, is a very talented young guy and has done lots of work for me on other guns, including a custom revolver build for my wife. He knows the kind of stuff I like and we discussed what to do with the Super. I gave him a short list of the things I was looking for, I wanted it to have three barrels - .38 Super, 9mm, and 9x23 Winchester, a 10-8 U-notch rear sight and a gold bead front, the roll marks removed from the slide, mirror polished flats and matte rounds, and I wanted everything black. He took it from there.

We spoke a number of times over the course of the build, he'd show me a little of this or that when I stopped in the shop for other stuff. I had my worries about whether I'd like it when it was done. We had set a price up front, it was going to be expensive, I could have bought a high end production gun instead, but I really wanted one built just for me. The finish ended up being a big issue because there isn't much available for a polished black finish and I didn't want it blued, I have a high polish blued custom already and I wanted something tougher and more durable. In the end we went with Ionbond DLC because it is pretty much the only black finish that doesn't hide the metal. Like a blued gun, if the bare metal is polished, then it will show the same polish after being finished. It is also very hard and scratch resistant. Every piece of the gun except the springs has been coated.

Anyway, after a year and a half, I picked it up today and it is perfect. The polish and finish are amazing, it is all jet black, just the way I wanted it. All of the internals are Wilson and Brown, naturally everything has been hand fitted. All of the checkering and serrations were done by hand. I got the grips from Wicked Grips, I need to do just a bit of fitting on them. I've only had time to shoot one mag through it and it shoots like a dream with the 9mm barrel. I couldn't be happier with it. Tomorrow I'll be trying out the Super and 9x23 barrels as well and will see what I can do with it at 25yds.
I'll be showing it off on a few different forums so some of you will see this post elsewhere.

Nice looking 1991 Series Govement Model - 1991A1? Didn't see that in the Colt Catalogue as a model designator/name(tm)

You must have a separate extractor for each barrel?

I've got a SW1911 .45 ACP with a .400 Corbon Bbl.

That's what they've been calling them for 20+ years now.
Just the one extractor, just have to swap barrels, bushings, springs, and mags. I'm going out back to try it with each of them in a little while, we'll see how it runs.

Double WOW! Great looking gun. It is nice to know there are young gunsmiths out there that can do things like that.

Thanks for posting.

BTW, Nice shooting

Yes, Robin is quite talented and only 27, he's got a long career ahead of him.

Very sweet looking 3 in 1 gun you've got there. I usually just go with a 9mm. conversion with my .38 Super so the 9X23 set-up is a nice addition as well. Definitely worth the wait.

Good looking pistol.
I am toying with having one of mine done in IonBond.

Is the extractor a standard 9mm/.38 Super extractor?
I ask because you have barrels for 2 rimless cartridges (9mm and 9X23) and the semi rimmed .38 Super.
I will be surprised if the gun functions with all 3 barrels without having to jack with the extractor; it will seemingly be too tight for the .38 Super-if adjusted for the 9mm and 9X23 barrel.
I have a 1911 in .38 Super Comp that I can shoot both .38 Super and .38 S.C. The .38 S.C. is a rimless .38 Super.
I have used an Aftec extractor that allows shooting both the semi-rimmed and rimless cartridges with no adjustment necessary.
Let us know how reliable it is with all 3 barrels after you have an opportunity to wring it out.

Great looking pistol, BUT........

Just kidding, lol.... it looks amazing! Got me drooling all over my keyboard. That black looks DEEP!!! Love it, congrats!

I'm not sure what he used for an extractor. I had just a few minutes yesterday morning to try it out with some different ammo. No time for groups, just fooling around to see how it would run. Tried 3 different 9mms - WWB 115gr FMJ, Blazer aluminum case 124gr FMJ, and Federal 9BPLE 115gr JHP +P+, and 3 different. 38 Supers - Aguila 130gr FMJ, Winchester 125gr STHP, and Georgia Arms 125gr GDHP. They all fed and extracted fine, no troubles at all. Didn't have time to try any 9x23 but I'm hoping for the best.

That nice tight group with 9mm WWB says it all! Very Nice!

Question;

What brand(s) of barrels / bushings and magazines are you using across the 3 caliber combinations?

I wish I could get my 9mm STI Trojan to shoot groups that tight! I'd be interested to see the 9x23 groupings!

Always been a fan of guns which allow multiple caliber functionality.

The 9mm barrel is a Kart, the Super and 9x23 barrels are Colt. I've got find time to get out back and shoot it off a rest for groups and since what it will do with each barrel/caliber.

The 9mm barrel is a Kart

I could have guessed that the 9mm was a Kart. You should try some 147 grain FMJ's through your gun. I have a stash of the new Winchester "Train" 147 grain FMJ ammo and my 9mm STI Trojan shoots this ammo to POA.

a gun writer decades ago had a Commander
9x19 & .38 SUper - both barrels from Bar Sto
and said to switch required barrel, mags and
extractor,. fwiw
