Well I picked it up tonight and I wasn't planning on doing anything to it but after looking it over I am going to get it bead blasted because it came pretty rough from ruger.

Also I notice that the ejector rod is loose and has play but from looking at the design I am thinking this is normal with this gun, is it.

BTW other than being a little rough it is perfect and I can see why some say they are built like a tank.

The ejector is floppy that's normal. They're not built like a Smith; different design. Again, don't expect the finish of S&W, but they're one heck of good tool. I carry mine 7 days a week, in the leather that I posted on your other thread.

I knocked off some of the sharp edges, Flitz'd it, installed the wood grip panels, made for an amazing transformation. Fairly nice looking gun.

Yes, it is quite normal to the design. The ejector rod is not part of the pivot of the cylinder or the lock up as with Smith and Wesson, Taurus, etc. Its only function is case ejection and does not rotate with the cylinder. The cylinder locks at the crane in the front of the cylinder as well as the traditional ball/detent at the back of the cylinder.

Yeah, the little gun is built like a tank, bank vault, whatever else you can compare it to that's strong. :D It is the strongest .357 extant short of an L frame/GP100 class gun. It's also easy to take out the trigger group for thorough cleaning which I REALLY like about Ruger DAs.

Oh yes I can deal with the roughness for the tank like build, this one is gonna have a permanent home. BTW has anyone ever used a fine (non steel) pad or ever polished their sp101?

Tango,

Never polished it but after a couple of months of carry, mine has started to look a little more shiny.

They are great guns...enjoy.

I'm halfway through my waiting period for a 3" SP101. I'd read about the finishes being a little rough, so I was expecting the worst and I ended up being pleasantly surprised by the exterior finish on my gun. Overall, I think the SP101 is a better-than-average-looking handgun, and real ones look better than pictures.

If you go over the whole thing with very fine steel wool, you can get pretty close to the factory finish. I've "polished" up several stainless Rugers in this fashion with very good results.
